EverQuest Next was supposed to be the third main game of the series and aimed to introduce several new features to the franchise, including a world-building aspect similar to Minecraft. The development started in 2009, the project was rebooted in 2011, announced in 2013, entered closed beta in March 2014 and was cancelled on March 11, 2016. The stated reason was a lack of fun.
