IGN Entertainment, Inc. is an online network for gaming facts, resources and information. With headquarters in Brisbane, California, additional US regional offices are located in New York, Los Angeles, Costa Mesa, and Chicago. International offices reside in Montreal (Canada), London (UK), and Sydney (Australia).
The company was once Imagine Media, a publisher of traditional print magazines founded by Chris Anderson in about 1994. It published PC Gamer, Next Generation, CD-ROM Today and others. In 1997, when the internet was fairly new, the company launched Imagine Games Network, a collection of three platform-specific websites: N64.com, PSX Power and Saturnworld. The abbreviation IGN really took hold when N64.com was renamed IGN64.ign.com in January 1998 after an infringement complaint from Nintendo about N64.
In February 1999 Affiliation Networks, the online division of Imagine, was spun off and started as an entirely new company lead by Mark Jung. Within a few months it was renamed Snowball. Before the year was out, Snowball owned IGN, Chick Click, Power Students Network, The Den, Vault Network, Scoops Wrestling and a handful of other properties. After selling or shutting down many of those properties, Snowball changed the name to IGN Entertainment in 2002, changed its stock symbol from SNOW to IGNX, reflecting the company's renewed focus on its gaming roots.
In recent years, IGN has acquired several other well-known websites including TeamXbox, GameSpy, 3D Gamers, FilePlanet, Rotten Tomatoes and AskMen. Each of them retained their individual originality after the mergers. GameStats is one of IGN's original properties, started by the company in 2004.
IGN now also distributes games electronically through its Direct2Drive portal which was launched in September 2004. Technology for online game play, originally developed by GameSpy, is also offered by IGN.
In October 2005 IGN Entertainment, Inc. was acquired by Fox Interactive Media, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of News Corporation, for approximately $650 million.
In 2009 Mark Jung is still actively involved with the company as the CEO.
