Founded in 1989 in the United Kingdom by computer veterans Clement Chambers and Michael Hodges, On-line was among the first to develop both massively multiplayer internet games and CD-ROM boxed products. In 1996 On-line PLC was formed and floated on the AIM market in London.
In August 1996, the company acquired On-Line Entertainment Ltd. On-line's developers enjoyed a series of successes, from The Lawnmower Man (on CD-i) to Micro Machines (on Colour Gameboy).
Since approximately 1999, the company ran one of the first MMOG online games, Iron Wolves, a real-time, graphical, 3D naval simulation for Windows developed by Interactive Broadcasting. The Iron Wolves server continued operation until September 2002.
On-line Sports Games, a label, was launched during 1999 with the release of Giant Killers, a soccer management game. In May 2000 Rod Cobain was appointed Marketing Director of On-line Sports Games Ltd. ready for the release of the next product Giant Killers Euro Manager 2000.
Their publishing division, Akaei plc, was established in early 2000.
In 1999, the company began a British financial service and stock exchange network called ADVFN.com which was listed on London's AIM market in 2000. By May of 2003, ADVFN became the company's primary business, and the name On-Line was no longer used. ADVFN is still active in 2008.
