Overview edit · view history

Forgotten Empires LLC originally started as a modding team for Age of Empires II: The Conquerors, releasing a popular unofficial expansion called Forgotten Empires, which received over 1 million downloads since its release in late 2012.

Microsoft Studios called the team to port the unofficial expansion to Age of Empires II: HD Edition. The resulting full expansion The Forgotten was released in November 2013, but also marked the end of the development cycle for the unofficial Forgotten Empires expansion for the original game (even though it is still available for download).

In the following two years, the company created completely new expansions exclusive to the HD re-releases of Age of Empires II: HD Edition and Age of Mythology: Extended Edition (for which they also provided localization), being The African Kingdoms and Rise of the Rajas, and Tale of the Dragon, respectively.

They were also heavily involved in the development and post-release support of Age of Empires: Definitive Edition, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, and Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition.

They have also co-published Retaliation: Enemy Mine in 2015.

On June 8, 2022 Keywords Studios announced the acquisition of the studio for $32.5 million.
