Overview edit · view history
Blackbird Interactive (often abbreviated as BBI) is a private, independent game studio headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The company was founded in 2010. The founders are a team of experienced and successful video game industry veterans including senior Electronic Arts staff and founders of Relic Entertainment.
In 2010 development started with an ambitious sci-fi game entitled Hardware. Inspired by Homeworld, a franchise developed by some of BBI's founders, it was originally planned as a free-to-play real-time strategy game. After Gearbox Software bought the Homeworld IP in 2013, a deal was signed at PAX between Gearbox and BBI to turn Hardware into the next game in the Homeworld franchise and that became Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak, released in January 2016. They would also remaster the first two games in the series in 2015, as well as develop a full-blown sequel Homeworld 3, scheduled for 2024.
Their title Hardspace: Shipbreaker was released in 2020 in early access and 2022 as a full product. The licensed RTS CrossFire: Legion also shipped in 2022 to a lukewarm response.
