The9 is an online game operator and developer in China. Through 9Webzen Limited, a joint venture in which they own 51%, The9 has become a leading online game operator in China. They began to offer their self-developed online virtual community game the9 City in 2000 and commercialized it in December 2000. Currently, The9's business is primarily focused on operating MMORPG's.

They have also obtained exclusive licenses to localize and operate MMORPGs in China, including MU, World of Warcraft, Mystina Online and Granado Espada. Meanwhile, they're also working on proprietary online games, including MMORPGs. Joyful Journey West is the first side scrolling MMORPG developed in-house. The9's other products and services include game operating support, website solutions and advertisement services, and game-related short messaging services (SMS).

After the rumor in April, Electronic Arts now officially announces an equity investment in the company. With $167 million, they gain a 15% share.

April 2007

It is widely announced that Electronic Arts has bought a 19% stake in The9 Limited company for about $200 million. A few days later, EA spokesman Jeff Brown said there was no signed agreement.

April 2004

The company invests in Object Software Limited, a forceful onset in the R&D field of domestic online games.

July 2002

The company cooperates with Webzen of Korea and becomes the exclusive licensee and operator of MU.

May 2000

The name "The9 Limited" is assumed.
