A game that tries too hard

The Good
The storyline is that a boy with an unusual name (Astyanax) from the real world is magically zapped into a magical world where he must don armor and weapons to rescue the princess. To list strong points about the game, it was a little bit different from the usual NES side-scrolling action game in that the game characters were slightly larger than the usual NES characters and the graphics and color schemes were unique.

The Bad
I always felt that this game tried too hard. The game did its best to integrate cinema cut scenes but they were unsuccessful because they were so painfully slow-moving. Indeed, this was a problem with a lot of older NES games that attempted to have a deep story. Astyanax is an okay game but it just seemed to miss the mark in a lot of ways.

The Bottom Line
Astyanax had promise and I wanted to enjoy it since it was trying to be different. But different is not always good.
