Sopwith
- Sopwith (1984 on DOS)
Description
You play single player or against the computer, flying a sopwith biplane, and trying to shoot down the enemy planes and destroy all the enemy buildings. Sopwith II is an update to Sopwith that adds gravity, smoother graphics, birds and oxen, recording and playback of games, multiple levels, and runs at the right speed on modern machines.
A classic game that has developed a small cult following.

I grew up with this and LOVED it!
The Good
We had this game in my school computer lab back in the 80s and I played it everyday! The idea that you could fly like in world world I and bomb buildings was attractive back when 4 colors was top of the line.
The Bad
I could never seem to beat the computer AI! As soon as I shot one plane down, another was up in the air shooting me down, they even double teamed me at times. Difficult stuff!
The Bottom Line
This game was possibly the birth of the war flight simulator. To get a feel for computer gaming in the 80s, this title is a must!

One of the all time classic PC games. A side scrolling CGA masterpiece.
The Good
Sopwith 2 is timeless. Whether you run a Pentium 3 mega system or a lowly 8088, Sopwith still plays like a charm. What's not to like about the game? Buildings that explode and can take you out with it. Shooting down enemy planes that can crash into cows. Distortable landscape. Physics. Impressive today, revolutionary in 1984! Download and play Sopwith today!
The Bad
No multiplayer support. Oh well, look for it in the upcoming Sopwith 3!
The Bottom Line
The best CGA game since Alley Cat, and it's still playable today!

Trivia
Despite speculation to the contrary BMB Compuscience never did go belly-up, but instead merged with and changed its name to Systems Xcellence Inc. late 1994 or early 1995.
The year of release of the second version of Sopwith (1985) is actually the likely year of creation as analyzed from the modification history of the official source code. "Sopwith 2" or "Sopwith II", as it became known, probably started spreading around 1986 or 1987.
