TearRing Saga: Yutona Eiyū Senki
Description
Often referred to as simply “TearRing Saga” (TRS or TS), TearRing Saga: Yutona Eiyuu Senki is the first installment in the TearRing Saga series, developed by Tirnanog and created by Shouzou Kaga, the original director and creator of the Fire Emblem series. The game opens with the rise of the Cult of Gerxel, a group that wishes to revive the dead god Gerxel. The player follows two protagonists, Runan and Holmes, who flee from their homeland as it is conquered by the Cult and its patron, the Zoa Empire. As the story progresses, they gradually gather allies and work to liberate the various lands under imperial occupation. As the story progresses, they learn more about the history of the Cult of Gerxel, the Zoa people, and unrest within the Empire, ultimately culminating in a clash against the Cult's leader, Pontiff Guenchaos.
Gameplay is essentially unchanged from its Fire Emblem roots: the player strategically controls a number of units on square-grid maps and attempts to fulfill the mission's win condition, which varies from map to map. Characters who fall in battle remain dead, though they can be resurrected late in the game by the use of a limited-use item called the Dakruon. Individual character subplots are greatly affected by whether they are placed into Runan's party or Holmes's, as the two groups visit different locations and can only exchange party members three times across the game's 40 chapters.

Trivia
Not As Originally Advertised
The game's studio, Tirnanog, was founded by Shouzou Kaga after his departure from Intelligent Systems following the release of Fire Emblem: Thracia 776. TearRing Saga was originally advertised as a successor to the Fire Emblem series titled Emblem Saga, and it was even planned to feature Fire Emblem characters such as Xane (from Fire Emblem: Monshou no Nazo) and Lewyn (from Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu). However, due to pressure from Intelligent Systems, these connection to the Fire Emblem series were obscured pre-release by changing some names and story elements, as well as renaming the game to TearRing Saga: Yutona Eiyuu Senki. Despite these changes, Tirnanog and the game's publisher Enterbrain were sued for copyright infringement and unfair competition by Intelligent Systems and Nintendo, who attempted to halt sales of the game. Although Tirnanog was made to pay a fee for violating unfair competition laws, the copyright infringement case was ruled in Tirnanog's favor, and the game was allowed to remain on shelves.
There are two beta versions of the game released on demo disks titled Emblem Saga Prelude and TearRing Saga Prelude; although the demo prevents the player from progressing past the third chapter, this can be circumvented by the use of hacking, enabling the entire beta versions to be played.
The game was released only in Japan, but fan translations exist for both English and Vietnamese. A sequel (tentatively titled TearRing Saga 2) following the supporting characters Sennet, Richard, and Tia was in the planning stages of development, but the plans were scrapped, and development moved on to Berwick Saga: Lazberia Chronicle Chapter 174.
