As our follow-up to the Commander Keen trilogy, Id Software is working on "The Fight for Justice": a completely new approach to fantasy gaming. You start not as a weakling with no food--you start as Quake, the strongest, most dangerous person on the continent. You start off with a Hammer of Thunderbolts, a Ring of Regeneration, and a trans-dimensional artifact. Here the fun begins. You fight for Justice, a secret organization devoted to vanquishing evil from the land! This is role-playing excitement.

And you don't chunk around the screen. "The Fight for Justice" contains fully animated scrolling backgrounds. All the people you meet have their own lives, personalities, and objectives. A 256-color VGA version will be available (smooth scrolling 256-color screens--fancy that)!

And the depth of play will be intense. No more "whack whack here's some gold." There will be interesting puzzles and decisions won't be "yes/no" but complex correlations of people and events.

Fans of first-person shooters will want to lock and load their nail guns and go beast hunting in this faithful port of id Software's monster PC hit.

Graphically, Quake for PC improved on the look of Doom -- another id creation -- by replacing sprites with 3-D monsters. Stir in fine use of shadows and seriously spooky sound effects and you have one of the moodiest paks yet for the N64.
Single-player mode propels you through 26 dark and twisting levels in search of nightmarish demons crossing over to our world via top-secret "Slipgates."

Starting with an ax and a single-barrel shotgun, you'll upgrade to grenade and rocket launchers, nail guns and, finally, the most powerful weapon of all: the energy-emitting Thunderbolt. You can build up your resistance by finding armor, Biosuits and Megahealth boxes. Extremely rare power-ups quadruple your attack strength, make you invincible or render you virtually invisible. Quake 64 also features four difficulty levels and customizable Controller settings.

Midway has retained most of the layouts from the PC version. Quake 64 conveys a great sense of 3-D environments, with monsters, passageways and items to be found both above and below. Fortunately, quick and responsive play control makes it easy to master swimming, jumping on the run and other survival skills. The two-player option gives players a taste of PC network death matches.

Baffling mazes, tons of secret areas and frighteningly realistic monsters peg Quake 64 as a contender to be reckoned with in the strong field of N64 first-person shooters.
