RunMan: Race Around the World
Description
RunMan: Race Around the World is the sixth game in the long-running RunMan series with the titular character doing what he does best: running as fast as possible. There is a race organized to determine who is the fastest in the world, but when RunMan arrives all the other participants flee. He is declared the winner, but RunMan does not want an unearned crown and decides to run all alone anyway.
The game is divided in different zones (the overview is modelled after the one from the Super Mario World games) with seven levels each. The goal is simply to reach the destination to unlock the next level. Replaying is encouraged by three medals that can be earned per level, from bronze to gold, based on the completion time. Additionally the game awards points for actions and deducts some when RunMan is slowed down or dies.
Next to regular running, RunMan can speed up (called zooming) with an additional key. While in this mode he can also take out most enemies, break through certain blocks and jump into walls to kick off them and reach higher areas. Players often need to switch quickly between both modes as there are also obstacles and enemies that require the regular running mode to pass, for instance sleeping enemies or fireblocks. Gameplay is designed to move as swiftly as possible, with swings, boosting pads and ramps. When RunMan dies or disappears into a gap he reappears right away as the completion time is the only thing that matters. He can also dive down in the air or fly using a hang glider.
The last level of each zone is a boss level. It usually requires RunMan not to make a single mistake as he is chased by a monster, similar to RunMan's Monster Fracas. When the monster catches up, the level needs to be replayed immediately. The game saves ghosts of sessions automatically and these can also be loaded in-game to beat the best time or to exchange them with friends.
The game retains the typical drawn cartoon style, accompanied by '40s jazz and blues music.
