The bimbo of X-Men games: pretty, but nothing there

The Good
The graphics for X-Men: Mutant Academy are quite nice, at least by Game Boy Color Standards. I was impressed how well the artists managed to capture the characters with only three-color sprites to work with. The backgrounds are colorful and reasonably detailed as well.

There's a pretty good roster with 11 characters. Some popular characters like Jubilee, Rogue and Iceman are not present, but it's acceptable.

The Bad
It's pretty easy to sum up what's wrong with this game. At the start of the game, I selected Wolverine. My "strategy" was to walk up to each character I fought and stand there while repeatedly hitting the B button. I beat the whole game without continuing.

There are some other minor gripes, like the music loop is well under ten seconds long and seems to be the same in each level, plus it's not very good music, but that's pretty minor compared to the broken gameplay.

The Bottom Line
Maybe the problem is the AI and not the engine, in which case multiplayer would be good. I don't know as I wasn't able to test that. At any rate, single player is pretty useless unless you just want to look at the pretty pictures.
