Description

Dexter's Laboratory: Chess Challenge is a game based on the popular cartoon TV show of the same name. This chess game is a game mainly aimed at children who aren't normally interested in chess or board games and would be more easily convinced into learning how to play by playing a video game starring characters from the hit show.

Players can choose from 4 selectable characters from the cartoon series and there are also 4 different gameplay types to choose from.

Tournament Mode

In Tournament Mode, the player begins as a character and has to fight the other three characters in a chess match. It's pretty simple to figure out, since it's just normal chess.

Versus Mode

Versus Mode is a two-player mode which can be played with one GBA, where both players alternate control of the console or it can be played with two GBAs using the Link Cable. Players can choose their character and play chess.

Quick Play

This plays just like tournament mode except players only face one person. Players choose their own character and play a single game of chess against the computer.

Puzzle mode

The most complex game mode. The player has to clear the chess board by using his or her wits and different combinations of moves. This is the main part of the game. There are many different levels where the player has to find the correct solution.

Are You Dex Enough For The Challenge?

The Good
If you're one crazy fan of Dexter's Lab and a serious chess lover, then missing out this game is a sin for the likes of you. Why? Because the game is just awesome. While testing out your wits on the Chessground, you can enjoy living up the nostalgia of Dexter's Lab. With all the cool voice acts, decent graphics and an intelligent AI system; the game delivers you the best experience of both worlds (Dex Lab and Chess). The game is pretty much simple to get start with. You can go head-on-head with the game's AI in the Quick Game option or become a participant in the Tournament. Additionally, the game offers a Puzzle mode to let you check your Chess Instincts. The game allows 4 different sets of chess pieces themed after 4 prominent characters from the popular cartoon show - Dexter, Dee Dee, Mandark, and Captain Glory. Every time there is an engagement between 2 chess pieces in the game, a nice little cut-scene is there to amuse you. Doesn't matter whether you win or lose at the game, you'll definitely enjoy the game provided you're a Dex Lab fan-cum-chess enthusiast!

The Bad
To be honest, there is nothing that I didn't liked about the game. But it could have been better if it had some unlockables or extra stuff and the option to save game during a match and resuming later.

The Bottom Line
The game is a fun way to learn chess and to improve your chess skills while enjoying the Dex Lab theme. The game offers 3 different game difficulty settings, which means it has something for every chess player.
