This is the first version in the series where not only the online version, but also the retail version needs to be activated online to play the game. Publisher SEGA said the decision was taken to combat piracy. The game can only be activated through the Steam distribution service. It can be bought at other digital download stores, but because of the Steamworks inclusion it still needs to be played through Steam. The decision was not received well by everyone in the community.
