Description

Half-Life 2: Survivor is a Japanese arcade adaptation of Half-Life 2. It's played with two joysticks for movement, looking around and shooting and uses pedals for crouching and jumping.

The game's story mode is a cut down version of the original game. It focuses on specific set pieces and is divided into ten chapters (which can be played in any order), each consisting of a number of short levels. The levels are linear with very visible neon signs showing the way forward. There are objectives that have to be met for each level, usually involving killing specific enemies or making it to the exit. The player can't take too long, as each level has a time limit. Very little of the storytelling techniques of the original game remains, instead the story is told with cutscenes shown between the levels. The game is purely combat based and doesn't include any of the puzzle solving aspects of the original.

In addition to the story mode, there are also two multiplayer modes that could be played over LAN or Internet. There's the mission mode which is made for co-op and the battle mode which is a team based deathmatch mode for eight players. If less than eight player, the teams are filled out with bots. It features two factions (combine and human resistance) and is class based. Both teams have five classes: ranger, soldier, sniper, engineer and medic. The goal is to earn 25,000 points, or more points than the opposition when the match ends. Points are earned by damaging and killing enemies as well as picking up the dog tags that they drop. When playing it is possible to earn survivor gold which can be used to buy and customize items such as skins and weapons.

An updated version (Ver2.0) was released in 2007. It adds new features, such as single and tutorial modes for the battle mode, a medic class, more weapons and the Half-Life 2 Survivor Camp which allows players to see their stats and modify their classes in a browser.
