Rubik's Cube
- Rubik's Cube (1982 on DOS)
- Rubik's Cube (2016 on Nintendo 3DS, Wii U)
Description
Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the invention of the spatial geometry toy by Hungarian Ernő Rubik, this Doodle presents a digital version of the toy. The Rubik's Cube puzzle presents a cube whose six faces are each divided vertically three times and horizontally three times, making six groups of nine squares (or 54 squares overall). Each face starts in a unified colour but within a few twists along its axes, the coloured squares end up jumbled all around the cube's surfaces. The goal of this Doodle, as with the real-life toy, is to twist and turn its moving parts so as to reunite all the squares of each colour on one face of the cube each.

Trivia
May 19th
The Doodle doesn't commemorate a specific date, merely the 40th year since the toy's invention. But the specific number encoded in the day-month combination -- 5/19 -- is shorthand for the 519 quintillion potential cube configurations.
Technology
Google had long wanted to implement a Rubik's Cube Doodle, but the existing complement of web technologies was never yet sufficient to convey the desired experience. Not until now! The missing ingredient was CSS 3-D Transforms.
