Description

Tetris Blitz is a free-to-play mobile version of Tetris that differs from the original concept in several ways. Most notable is that it is time based and each game takes two minutes to play. The objective is simply to get the highest score possible within that time and it is not possible to lose. Blocks that reach the top of the screen simply vaporize and the game goes on. Another notable difference is the way the game is controlled. Instead of the traditional way of steering a block from top to bottom the player here simply taps on outlines of different placement options to have them swiftly fall into place. If not happy with the placement options the player can cycle them or manually move them around.

By clearing lines the player's frenzy meter rises and when it's all full the game enters frenzy modes. In frenzy mode lines are worth double points and special frenzy blocks appear from the bottom. These make it easier to create long cascades which lead to large amounts of points. Frenzy mode goes on until the player has made a certain number of drops without clearing lines. Clearing eight lines in a cascade leads to a multiplier increase.

The player can use various power-ups and up to three of these can be chosen before starting a game. The power-ups are dropped at random and are activated when a line with one is cleared. Among the power-ups that can be used are the magnet that draws all blocks to the left, lasers that vaporizes three random lines, time shift which add a five second time bonus and quake which sends out a shock wave that breaks the blocks into smaller parts which allows for cascading. In addition to power-ups there are also finishers which work similarly but are more powerful and are activated at the end of a game.

The game has four different game modes: single player, with friends, battles and tournaments. In single player the player has to advance on a leaderboard by beating the score of various fictive characters. The friends mode uses a Facebook connection and allows the player to compete against friends. The battle mode is a one versus one mode where players compete against each others in getting the highest score. Tournament is another multiplayer mode but with special rules.

Since the game is free-to-play it has a store where the player can use real money to acquire coins, power-ups and upgrades. Coins can also be earned by playing the game and are needed for power-ups. An acquired power-up can only be used in a few games before coins have to be spent to get further access to it. The game also uses energy which is required for multiplayer games. Each match decreases the energy and when it's all out the player has to wait for it to recharge or pay money to have it refilled.
