Description official description

Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom is the sequel to the third-person endless runner Sonic Dash. It has similar gameplay, but now the cast and the levels are based on the Sonic Boom television series. Just like the original game a character that runs automatically needs to be guided through an endless, randomized environment, avoiding obstacles, collecting items and defeating enemies. There are three lanes and a character is moved by swiping left or right. Swiping up is used to jump and down to roll and pass through low passages. Similar to the first game the vertical swipes are also used as attacks to defeat enemies.

The playable characters are Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles "Tails" Prower, Amy Rose, Knuckles the Echidna and Sticks the Badger. Sonic is available from the start and an additional one can be unlocked almost right away. The remaining characters are acquired by spending red rings, the premium currency. It is gathered slowly by locating red rings in levels or through an in-app purchase. Each character has a unique ability. Sonic for instance activates a ring magnet to collect rings from all three lanes simultaneously when in dash mode, Amy has a hammer and Knuckles can use a move that defeats enemies in all three lanes by swiping up and down quickly in succession.

During levels, the characters collect rings and temporary power-ups such as a shield or a ring magnet. When a character is hit all rings are lost and when falling down or hitting an enemy without rings the run is over immediately. Similar to the first game it is possible to bank rings at specific moments during runs. This is no longer done by jumping on springs, but by following an exit when it is available. The character then enters a tunnel, banks the rings and the player get to choose between all available characters to continue the run. Exits can be ignored, but the next sections are immediately harder and offer more rewards. By collecting orbs a boost meter is filled and boost can be activated when it is full by double tapping. The character then runs at a much faster speed and is invincible for a short time, also identical to the first game. There are grinding sections and jump pads that launch the character in the air for a short flight section based on the Enerbeam without enemies and only items. During this section the device needs to be tilted for control.

Rings are the basic currency and are used to upgrade characters, usually affecting the score multiplier. Sprites act as a companion and are a new game element. They provide bonuses such as a revive. One is provided every few hours and they can also be bought using rings. Some are one-time use while others are consumable or permanent. Just like characters they can be upgraded and it is possible to sell them as well. After a certain level they can be combined to evolve them.

The game is free-to-play with in-game advertisements and in-app purchases for both currencies, revives and tickets. There are daily rewards. Runs in succession are encouraged through missions that provide bonuses after completing them. There are also separate, temporary challenges such as Ring Rush!, Badnik Blitz! and Orb Rush! Unlike the main mode these use an energy/stamina system based on tickets to play them. New tickets are provided every few hours. There is a Team Play mode to race with up to three characters.
