Join Cosmo as he searches the "Forbidden Planet" for his parents

The Good
I consider Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure one of the best games Apogee has done since Duke Nukem. Cosmo is a standard platformer, much like Duke 1 & 2. The graphics are cartoonish, and when I first played this game, I thought that Cosmo had 256-color VGA graphics. Actually, the graphics are in EGA. As well as this, the game features Adlib support used for the music, which by the way, is quite sensational. However, like Apogee's early platform games, the sound effects still come out through the PC Speaker.

On his birthday, Cosmo's parents promise Cosmo that they would take him to Disney World by ship. But during their flight, a huge comet makes the ship crash land on the "Forbidden Planet". There, his parents attempt to fix the ship, and while they're at it, Cosmo decides to explore the planet himself, and comes back later, only to find both his parents missing. Will Cosmo find his parents so that he can get to Disney World?

Find out by helping Cosmo get through the planet's exotic locations such as alien tropics, haunted forests, ice caves, and even the insides of a giant bird. Each location has Cosmo jumping from tree to tree and on top of enemies, collecting fruit and gems along the way to score points. Some of these items are hidden either in drums or crates, and Cosmo can only collect them, if he jumps on drums or crates.

Cosmo starts off with three health units, but sometimes throughout the game, the units will be upgraded to five. If the planet's living things touch Cosmo, or shoot at him, or if he touches a set of spikes, fire, or 10-ton weights, he will lose a health unit. If all health units are lost as a result of touching a living thing, Cosmo will turn into an angel and fly up to heaven. However, instant death occurs if Cosmo falls down to nowhere. Then he will have to restart the section from the beginning. Fortunately, Cosmo will likely find power-up modules that increases his health units by one.

Just because Cosmo is friendly doesn't mean that he wouldn't have any weapons that will also help him during his quest. Chances are that Cosmo will find bombs, and use them to kill enemies, and blow up walls. He can enter bonus levels if he collects enough stars that are scattered throughout the level.

Cosmo can get to hard-to-reach places by using his suction hands to scale walls, or if there's one available, use a spring to catapult him into the air. Cosmo also has the opportunity to look up and down to see platforms that are off screen, but if he gets near the top of the screen,and Cosmo looks up, chances are that several items may fall down including stars and power-up modules. Cosmo may come across one or more hint globes in his journey, which gives him hints on completing a section.

There are three episodes to Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure, and each one consists of about ten levels. The high scores in all three episodes suggest that Apogee were fans of "The Simpsons". In Episodes 2 and 3, Duke Nukem makes a cameo appearance.

The Bad
Episode one of Cosmo is pretty easy to complete, the rest of the episodes get difficult after every level completed, particularly Episode 2 Level 10.

There is a cheat code that gives you maximum health and nine bombs. This code is useless as it only works once per game. Even it doesn't work when you save and restore games.



The Bottom Line
This is the best game, slightly better than Duke Nukem. If you see it in the bargain bins or at swap meets, I suggest that you buy it then have a go at completing it. ****

Stop and go fun

The Good
It was pretty fun. All the levels were doable while still challenging, and there was never a spot that was so difficult to get past that you'd need to cheat or use a guide.

Also, the game lets you chose how involved you want to be with the level: do you just want to charge through it and get to the exit as fast as possible, stay as long as possible and get as many points as you can, or go through carefully and get end with as many bombs and live bars as possible to make the next level easier?

It was nice that you were given the opportunity to look up and down without going up and down. It was also nice that you didn't have a limited number of lives to work with, and if you died, you just had to restart the level.

Also, the sounds are cute, and the graphics are pretty good, considering the time it was made.

The Bad
Two words: bottomless pits. I know bottomless pits are staples of platform games, but this was ridiculous. Cosmo often was suctioned securely to a wall, but if his cups went just one inch below the bottom of the screen, poof, suddenly he can't hold on anymore, and you have to restart the level. It doesn't matter if you have 5 full health bars, and before were on a nice, solid wall instead of a slippery one, you have to restart. It's even more annoying and aggravating than usual if it's at the end of a level, since because there's no way to save within a level, you have to go right back to the start.

Though you are able to look up and down, you cannot look right and left, making Cosmo seem strangely myopic. Stationary creatures and guns don't even notice you until you see them (which reminds me of the joke about the creature so dumb that he thought that if he couldn't see something, it couldn't see him, though in this game it's true), so sometimes you have to jump, fly through the air, then land back where you were just to shift the screen over a little (I won't even go into how crazy it is for characters to be able to maneuver through the air, since it's so widespread). Even while on walls, when Cosmo can turn his head and look, the screen doesn't change. Add to this that in adding the detail to the game, they sacrificed the scope, so it seems more zoomed in than other games.

It kind of goes without saying that this game doesn't make a lick of sense. Often there are fruits, objects, and whatnot just floating in the air, often in a perfect arc to where you need to land. Plus while he has limited hammerspace storage for bombs, and can somehow only carry 9 (though each is about a quarter of his size, and he indeed does take them from hammerspace), he somehow has unlimited storage for the thousands of fruits, vegetables, stars, gems, and other knickknacks he picks up through the game which increases his score. I don't mind so much it not making sense as it being inconsistent. Add to that the fact that he seems to go from one level to another at random, as if he's just wandering around the planet, that while small creatures are dangerous large ones with mouths swallow him whole without damaging him, and that for some reason there are levels set inside of beasts, which doesn't make sense no matter what planet you're on.

Finally, there's the music. It gives you the option to turn it on or off, but there isn't any. And to my knowledge, there never has been, since I don't remember there being any when I played it when I played it many years ago. But, while I was writing this, I tried out the game on DOSBox (I played through it by just double-clicking the .exe files in Windows Explorer), and I'll be danged, there IS music. Though now I hear it, it's not so great. Like the sound, while the graphics seem a bit ahead of their time, the sound and music seems a little behind. Few of the sounds in the game actually sound like real-life sounds, and the music sounds quite bad even compared to the MIDI of today.

The Bottom Line
Overall, it's pretty fun. It's also pretty cute. Trouble is, it's the sort of game you don't want to play for too long at a time. After struggling through one, maybe two levels, and perhaps dying 5 feet from the exit by falling in one of the many bottomless pits, you certainly want to take a break before trying the next level. So, while doable, it is frustrating, for that reason and many others. But it's simple and fun enough to keep coming back to play it.

Also, the ending to the first episode has disappointed kids and given them nightmares for years. Seriously, what kind of ending is that? Cosmo gets eaten by a big creature, and it looks like all the effort children put in the game is for nothing? I wonder if Apogee actually got many orders for episode 2 and 3, or a lot of people just gave up in sadness after 1. Anyway, it's this kind of crap that made me hate shareware (I was never allowed to order anything that was shareware as a kid anyway, so to me every shareware game was nothing more than a tease), but at least now this game is available on the internet for people to play and see what would have happened if they or their parents had paid $40 for the next two episodes.

A horribly cute little gem.

The Good
Cosmo is one of the coolest platformers ever -- it really does rock, with excellent EGA graphics, incredible ADLIB music and wonderful gameplay. Clever level design along with extremely humourous gameplay and concept make this one hell of a gem.

The Bad
Well, it's repetitive, and a bit minimalistic... but you get what you pay (very little) for :-)

The Bottom Line
A really good game I would probably buy if I ever saw in stores. Which, due its shareware nature, I would not.

All fun and great tunes make Cosmo a good game.

The Good
This game was a favorite of mine growing up. I loved it so much, I always wanted to order the non-Shareware sequels. This is among the best DOS games I've ever played. It has a lot of fun play. Basically, an alien boy is on a mission to save his folks on the "Forbidden Planet." To get to the end, he has to kill all sorts of evil creatures by jumping on them. It's tricky at times, but not frustrating. The graphics are cheery and splendid, and the music is incredibly catchy. I loved this game.

The Bad
There were very few things wrong with Cosmo. First, it's a little monotonous. There are like ten levels, and you really only face like five different creatures over and over again. You can also only kill them by jumping on them or bombs. It would have been cool if he found a ray gun and got to shoot sometimes, or something. But, all in all, the pros outweigh the cons.

The Bottom Line
A fun, cheery nostalgia trip that brings you back to a time when video games had silly synth music and graphics were not 3D but still looked good.

A good replacement for console platformers

The Good
One big advantage console systems had over PCs were their platform games. Cosmo didn't have the same silky action as Mario, but the colorful graphics and diverse levels made up for it. It also adds in nice twists, like being able to stick to walls and drop bombs.

The Bad
The animation was a little stiff. The sound effects were reasonable for something coming out of a PC speaker, but still not so hot.

The Bottom Line
If you've got a PC but no NES, Cosmo makes a good substitute for Mario.

The cutest, funniest and weirdest game on planet earth.

The Good
What can I say? The sound is impossible for 1992, the EGA graphics are amazing (probably because not many EGA games came out after 1992), the gameplay couldn't be better, there are extremely few controls, some even hardly used.



The Bad
Like most people the small variety of monsters, no, the extremely small variety of monsters. Every level you're like um... are there any more opponents to jump on! There's that red monster (the most common), the blue ball with the parachute, and the rest hardly appear.

The Bottom Line
This cute action-adventure is well-worth playing, I shouldn't be surprised because the creator of this game did make the award-winning Duke Nukem that held onto it's "best shareware" award for 2 straight years, and the wonderful Duke Nukem 2 that also won 3 or 4 awards (well it wasn't as good as the original). I am a huge Apogee fan, and this game just made me a bigger fan, a well deserved 5/5 for this game.

The world's cutest platformer.

The Good
The story is very fun, if a little weird (I mean, Aliens visiting Disney world?). The most original addition to this game are Cosmo's suction hands, which he can use to climb everything! Well, nearly everything, stuff like ice is just too slippery... The graphics are still good looking, and Cosmo just looks cute ;)

The Bad
Is there anything bad?

Longing for good old 2D platformers? Try this.
