Indiana Jones: DVD Adventure Game
Description
Indiana Jones DVD Adventure Game is a family board game for one to four players with interactive DVD elements.
The game comes in a card box which contains twenty-four temple tiles; one 'Hall of Ancients' start tile; four Indiana Jones plastic figures - each a different colour; thirty-six cardboard gold coins; five cardboard gold medallions; a DVD in a card slip-case; an eight sided die; three relics - the Ark, the Sankara Stones, and the Holy Grail; three cardboard boulders; forty 'Fortune & Glory' cards and a game manual designed to look like Indiana's journal.
The game starts with each player placing their Indiana Jones figure on it's starting point in the Hall of Ancients - one of the four coloured squares in the centre. After this they take two gold coins and two 'Fame & Fortune' cards keeping them all face down so that opponent's can't see them. Players take turns rolling the octahedral die and moving the appropriate number of spaces, when they come to the end of the Hall of Ancients tile they take a temple tile from the face-down stack and extend the playing area by laying down more pathways.* If the player lands on, or passes over, a 'trap square' then they use the DVD to complete a Trap Challenge. Typically the DVD shows two numbered die and the player has five seconds to roll the game die to match both. If the player matched both they take two Fame & Fortune cards and survive, if they matched one they take one card and survive.
- If the player lands on, or passes over, a combat square they use the DVD to complete the Combat Challenge, winning a fight earns the player gold coins. There are two forms of this challenge, the player either has to roll the die and get a number higher than the number the game shows in which case they take two coins from the coin pile, or they challenge another player and must beat their roll in which case they take two coins from that player.
- If the player lands on, or passes over, a secret passage square they use the DVD to see if it is open or not, it open they can move to any other secret passage on the board. If the door is closed the player continues their turn usually after following an instruction such as "Swap two cards with another player".
During this phase of the game the DVD will warn of unpredictable events and players must follow the commands of the spirits.
If a player enters a relic chamber, which they cannot enter unless they have either the correct gold coins, a medallion or a skeleton key though sometimes the game randomly won't let them enter and doesn't ask if they have the requisite items. If they are able to enter they must use the DVD to undertake a Relic Challenge. There are three relics; The Holy Grail: There are three challenges to be completed here, the Penitent Man; The Iehova Challenge; and the Grail Challenge which are the three tests faced in the Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade* film incorporating film clips from each
- The Stones of Sankarra: This challenge is based on the mine cart race in the film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, the left/right arrows on the remote steer while the up/down arrows drop debris on the pursuers
- The Holy Grail: One of the perils Indiana Jones faces in the film The Ark of the Covenant: Raiders of the Lost Ark is a buried Egyptian temple where the floor is covered by snakes. This challenge is based on that, the player must navigate a path through the snakes to retrieve the relic
When all three have been collected the players head back to the Hall of Ancients. During this phase the temple will be collapsing and the DVD will instruct players to remove parts of the temple, the temple tiles each have a letter A-H on them, if a player's Indiana Jones is on the tile removed then their game is over - they can make no more moves but they could still win.
The object of the game is to arrive back in the Hall of Ancients with the most gold. There's a gold bonus for getting back first, with smaller bonuses for being second or third; there's the gold coins and medallions collected; Fame & Fortune cards are exchanged for gold as are relics. Players add up the total and the highest score wins.
