The Smoking Mirror is an excellent game, and fans of the classic adventure genre should appreciate it for it's great story and good, solid puzzles. The game is seamless, runs great, and features some lovely graphical effects. In the opening playable part of the game there is a fire, and the flame effects are just amazing. It IS possible to die in the game, but not in too many places, and you will have time to react and play your way around it - nothing frustrating. All in all, I highly recommend this game. You may not have heard of the story or even be interested in Mayan history yourself, but if you enjoy a good story that plays out well without being infuriating, you'll probably like this game a lot. Bottom Line: A great classic style adventure game. Extremely impressive animation and panning effects. Engaging story, logical puzzles, a joy to play through. Highly recommended, even if you have never played the first game, Shadow of the Templars.

The Broken Sword series has quickly become one of my favorite series of games, regardless of genre. Every single detail of the saga oozes with finesse and polish, and the strong stories leave a memorable residue in my mind. While I eagerly await the fourth incarnation, as I hope you all do, Broken Sword II: The Smoking Mirror is a masterpiece that I hope everyone takes the time to enjoy.

What seemed clear with Broken Sword, is now a fact with this second episode: Revolution Software has mastered the adventure genre, elegantly mixing historical facts and fiction to create captivating stories that literally illuminate the player's imagination. It's difficult to think of a better game, except maybe for LucasArts' upcoming Monkey Island-based title, but in the meantime Broken Sword 2's hundreds of puzzles will keep the gamer's attention for countless hours of challenging game play. Broken Sword 2 has reached the top, and it will be difficult, maybe impossible, to dethrone it unless Revolution Software comes up with a new title in the series, but that is another story.

Fabuła znakomita - a to chyba w grach przygodowych najważniejsze.

Revolution has taken the point ‘n’ click adventure theme to its limits thanks to some wonderful animation and an absorbing story. With a projected 60 hours of playing time, it also represents excellent value for money. Take our advice and pull on your best adventuring boots, a copy of the Observer’s book of South American Obsidian Death Shields and enjoy one of the best 2-D adventures ever programmed.

Broken Sword is the first in a planned trilogy; Broken Sword II is already out for the PC, but it's not known if a Playstation version is yet in the works. Hey, I guess we should just be happy to get such a high-quality point-and-clicker for the Playstation (even though, as always, it's arguable whether this type of game belongs on the Playstation at all).

Ein richtiges Rätselvergnügen also.

This type of adventure game isn't for everyone. Interaction is accomplished solely with a cursor, and it's a very relaxed, methodic approach to gaming, that might turn more action-oriented fans off. If you like to think, though, and are looking for what is probably the best console point-and-click adventure game available on the PlayStation, then step right up. Revolution joins Sierra and Lucasarts as one of the finest crafters of adventure games I've seen in recent years, and the fact that it's pulled off so nicely on a console just makes it more rewarding. Beautiful control and voice acting, good animation, and a nicely executed plot all add up to a fun, well-rounded experience.

If you’ve never played an adventure game before, this would be a great one to start with. The story is engaging, the animation is fantastic, and you really get to know the characters in a way that shows you the difference between adventure games and other genres. Most of the puzzles are logical, and except for the maze, there are no long trial and error sequences. The in-scene hints are excellent. You’re putting yourself into the middle of a movie, and it’s a lot of fun. I play a lot of adventure games, and I really enjoyed this one. It’s quality work all the way through.

I have a great pile of games as yet unplayed, and this was one of them. I had played the first Broken Sword game (Shadow of the Templars; Circle of Blood in the US), and my opinion of that one was pretty lukewarm. I thought there was far too much conversation and not as many puzzles as I would like, but parts of it were truly outstanding. However, I know these Broken Sword games are many people's all-time favorites, and I wanted to try to understand why. Here's what I thought of Broken Sword II.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first Broken Sword and this one is just as entertaining, though a little easier. As I said in my review of the earlier game I do like this sort of graphic adventure -- they are just fun to play. Experienced adventurers may find the game over all too soon, but for new or less-experienced players there are many hours of fun in store. Have we seen the last of George and Nico? I hope not because the stories and gameplay are very entertaining and I've become rather fond of this adventuring couple. I'd like to see Nico involved in even more of the action in the next one.

In the second installment of the Broken Sword series, the developer has taken the formula of success from Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars one step farther. Shifting from a focus on the legend of the Knights Templars, the new story revolves around the equally intriguing culture of the Mayan civilization in Central America. With superior graphics and a fair dose of original puzzles, Broken Sword: The Smoking Mirror (also called Broken Sword II: The Smoking Mirror) proves to be a worthy sequel.

The house is on fire, a poisonous spider is crawling closer, and George Stobbart is tied up and in big trouble once again. George clearly didn't get his fill of mysticism, murder, and exotic-location mystery solving in the Circle of Blood because he and Nicole Collard (Nico) are back, caught this time in a smuggler's web that leads directly back to the dark Maya god Tezcatlipoca.

As with all games of this nature you'll only be able to play through it once so the value is a little limited, and depending on your experience with graphical point-and-click adventures your mileage may vary. If you're looking for a 3D shoot-fest or a processor straining racing game, stay away from this game, but if you want to experience an interesting game and intriguing story line, your value for money is assured. With over 30 hours of gameplay Broken Sword has a little more substance than you would expect from a game you would rent so buy it and pass it on to a friend when you're done.

WindowsComputer Gaming World (CGW)
All in all, BROKEN SWORD: THE SMOKING MIRROR is above average, but it's not great. While the engine and the graphics have been refined, there are some minor slips in plot, dialogue, and puzzles that bring the whole experience down a bit. If you're looking for a decent traditional adventure game to take up your time, this will do.

WindowsAdrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
It offers a pretty simple storyline combined with some well thought-out puzzles that can keep most gamers tamed for a few hours. The first adventure with these characters seemed to offer longer gameplay and a more in-depth story line, but Broken Sword cashes-in on the ability to continue with something good. The part about these adventures that can become frustrating is that when you are looking at a screen you simply need to figure out the right combination of things to solve most puzzles. This makes Broken Sword a thinking game more than an adventure game. I did like following the story through to the end, and found it a good change to be able to use Nico as a character instead of watching her from the sidelines. The game's speed can be slow at times and the animations are not always that fast, but, in the end, the game succeeds at what it sets out to do. Broken Sword offers gamers a good mix of cartoon and story, and puts players in control of their own destinies.

PlayStationGameSpot
Broken Sword II is a wonderful throwback to the classic Sierra-style adventure game and is a great adventure for fans of the style. The horrendous loading times that plagued the original have been trimmed a great deal, and the animation runs a whole lot smoother. Still, the game is not for everyone. Earfuls of only semirelevant conversation and the digital pad's inability to properly replicate a mouse make Broken Sword II tedious at times. But while Broken Sword II certainly isn't revolutionary, it's still refreshing to see a game of this nature done well.

PlayStationGaming Age
Despite some of the complains I have with Broken Sword II, I have thoroughly enjoyed playing the game and it's a fun, entertaining adventure that is unusual to find on the PlayStation. If the mouse for the PlayStation as more widely available, maybe we would see these kinds of games like this on the machine more often.

PlayStationAll Game Guide
The game's interaction is basically one-on-one with the characters. So with a well-written story narrated in the past tense, and good but overdone voiceovers, Broken Sword II: The Smoking Mirror leaves little to be desired even by adventure aficionados due to the bottom line -- it's a boring game with an old game engine! Be prepared to sleep.

The hand-painted backgrounds are consistently stunningly beautiful, and the almost-full-screen play area is a welcome relief after recent painful experiences I've had with inexcusably small playing screens in other games. The whole look of the game is reminiscent of a high-quality animated film. The music is also evocative, subtle and effective.

WindowsAll Game Guide
Really, that's the heart of the problem. The most intriguing thing about The Smoking Mirror is how it could possibly have been created by the same folks who came up with its predecessor. If you're looking for a really great graphic adventure game, give Circle of Blood a try but resist the temptation to pick up its sequel. Like the game's title implies, it's all smoke and mirrors and very little substance.

Some people may like this game. I don't know who, but statistically they wouldn't make type of game if it didn't have any audience. Right? I mean supposable their was a Broken Sword one and it was popular enough to warrant this game. I don't know I never saw it and even the worst movies still manage to make sequels. This game is not my cup of tea. The stereotypic way in which members of other cultures are portrayed just serves to sour any further hope this game may have had of appealing to me. Feel free to try it for yourself. Just don't say I didn't warn you.

Broken Sword: The Smoking Mirror is Revolution Software's follow-up to the extraordinary graphic adventure Circle of Blood (called Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars in Europe). Like its predecessor, The Smoking Mirror is a visually beautiful game that puts its two central characters, American adventurer George Stobbart and his French reporter girlfriend Nico Collard, in pursuit of the truth behind an age-old myth. This time, the two reluctant adventurers must travel the world in a race to stop the return of Tezcatlipoca, the legendary Mayan God of Death.
