Overview
Revolution Software is a UK game development studio established in 1990 by
Charles Cecil,
Tony Warriner,
David Sykes and
Noirin Carmody. The company focuses on adventure titles and its first release was
Lure of the Temptress in 1992. The early titles were all developed using their proprietary
Virtual Theatre engine, which was used for the last time in the second
Broken Sword game
Broken Sword: The Smoking Mirror (1997).
The studio is especially known for the 1994 dystopian adventure
Beneath a Steel Sky, and the
Broken Sword series with four games released between 1994 and 2006. Around 2000 the studio worked on the licensed titles
Disney's Story Studio: Disney's Mulan and
Gold and Glory: The Road to El Dorado, and launched
In Cold Blood as an original IP.
Following the fourth
Broken Sword game
Secrets of the Ark: A Broken Sword Game in 2006, no new titles were released. Instead, the studio worked on a director's cut and a remastered version of earlier installments in the series. The traditional PC focus was expanded by making them available on new platforms such as Nintendo DS, Wii, Android and iOS.
In July 2012 a fifth game in the
Broken Sword series,
Broken Sword: The Serpent's Curse, was announced through a Kickstarter campaign based on crowd funding. When the target was reached on 5th September 2012, stretch goals were made available along with option to greenlight the development of
Beneath a Steel Sky 2.
