Trivia
Development
The game was originally written in 1994 in Turbo Pascal as practice in VGA programming. The author had no intention to release the game, but planned to use its engine for other, more original games.
Rip-off
An unfinished beta version of the game (with only four levels, and impossible to finish) somehow leaked out, and was being sold by a group named "Chaos Software" under the title Mario!!!, its authorship credited to one "Adam Howard", who allegedly programmed the game in "Borland Turbo Pascal 7.0, Borland Turbo C v2.00, Microsoft QuickBASIC v4.5". The game was sold as shareware, and could be "registered" for $15. The text files distributed with this version can be read here.
Mario!!! can still be found on shovelware CDs and shareware repositories all over the world. When this version's existence came to the author of Mario & Luigi's attention, he decided to release the full version along with its source code online on his website.
The professional golfer Tiger Woods was once seen playing Mario!!! in a TV interview. A screencap of this was posted on the website Vintage Gaming Network, as people assumed he was using a NES emulator.
