Worth Playing
Overall, the game delivers in every way it should. Naturally, there are always reservations about licensed games. It’s so easy for a developer to just assume that they can release a half-baked product and let the kiddies come spend their money, but EA and Know Wonder have done a great job with this series. It won’t win any awards for innovation, and it certainly won’t challenge anyone who’s been gaming for more than a few months, but Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban will definitely please fans of the series ... and there are a lot of us out there.

There are only a couple of caveats that bear repeating if you're interested in this game: One, any player of even marginal skill will finish the game in five to six hours, and two, its puzzles and combat are both remarkably easy. Those facts make Prisoner of Azkaban a great game for younger kids, and it's a lot of fun for less-discriminating older fans of Harry Potter too. The game may be short and easy, but it's also thoughtfully designed and genuinely entertaining, and KnowWonder deserves credit for that.

Prisoner of Azkaban is the best use of the Harry Potter license so far, by a clear margin. It would be a forgettable effort without the license, but its core audience is more interested in immersing themselves in the Potter world. It works very well in this regard, and if you're a fan of the books, you'll find it both engaging and entertaining. Polish your wand and stock up on Bertie Bott's Every-Flavor Jelly Beans, because you're in for some long nights of wizardry.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban presents an improved aesthetic for the series, with great looking characters and environments. However, the gameplay is too simplistic for even the most inexperienced gamer. Only hardcore Potter fans need.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkabar, looks great, does a nice job of re-creating Hogwarts, and is fun if you like exploring and finding secret areas. It’s a good game, just not a good Harry Potter story. If you want to knew about Harry Potter, read the book instead.

Let's face it; though the books and films have been enjoyed by adults and kids alike, Harry's PC games have definitely skewed towards a younger audience and this latest is no exception. And while the gameplay might be enjoyable for those who love the series, without that crucial Potter brand the game will inspire little more than indifference among the vast majority of gamers. The fact that the game actually requires you to backtrack through certain areas to collect all the cards and beans you can find merely indicates that the developers hoped to prolong the experience of playing without necessarily have to worry about adding new content. As I said, people who like the books or the movie will like the game, but only to the extent that they can appreciate the franchise. Those who are hoping for a challenging (or at least interesting) game would do well to look elsewhere.

Aside from one semi-enjoyable mini-game that involves riding a Hippogriff, Azkaban is little more than a shallow collecting game with only the most superficial Harry Potter connections. What it represents seems to be about the weakest attempt at capitalising on the franchise that EA could muster (without actually making something bad, per se). The only positive thing to say about the PC version over its console counterparts is that it is much simpler, and therefore more suitable for the youngest of youngsters. Don’t get me wrong, the game has some charm, and while it may be shallow, it’s at least quite fun while it lasts. That said, it’s hard to recommend as a full-price game. At a budget price this could have been a nice little diversion for fans.

With very little effort Harry Potter the Prisoner of Azkaban can be finished in a single evening which indeed stands out as a serious drawback. Once you complete it, chances are slim that you'll want to try the whole thing again. If you're looking for a challenging and lengthy action/adventure, I see no reason why you should waste your time on this game. If you're that desperate to purchase the game, you'll be happy to know that the PC version carries a $29.99 price tag, unlike the console version which is worth 40 bucks. So at least you'll save some money if you decide to play it on the PC.

Despite all of these somewhat questionable design issues, the title does deliver a rather enjoyable hop n’ bop experience that can easily burn a few hours without demanding too much investment of cerebral activity. And if you’ve got a younger sibling or child around the house who can handle the grim spectre of death looming over their in-game avatar, it’s definitely a valid visual distraction to sit them in front of and avoid taking an active role in their upbringing.
