Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Restoration of Erathia

This has been the year of the sequel. Games like Starcraft, Alpha Centauri, Warlords III, and SimCity 3000 have all been big hits. These games have all provided improved strategy, AI, interfaces, and graphics while mostly maintaining their predecessors’ style and gameplay. Heroes of Might and Magic III is the most recent addition to the very popular Heroes of Might and Magic series, and like these other recent sequels it improves upon its original while keeping the same popular style of play.

I'll admit straight out that I'm a junkie of the Heroes of Might and Magic series. I've played HOMM2 so much I practically wore a hole in my CD, mostly playing multiplayer games with our recently departed editor, Emil. We played dozens of games, usually co-op, by e-mail and every single one was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Knowing its predecessor inside and out helped me prepare for the arrival of HOMM3 and I had my laundry list of things I wanted to see in the game. Those of you who have played the game understand the real appeal HOMM has; addiction is an understatement.

Spending even a short time with the game quells any doubt that it's anything but an excellent sequel and a first-rate strategy game in its own right.

Since the colorful hand-drawn 2D graphics have aged more gracefully than contemporary 3D games, it's not even painful to go back and play again. This is a true classic of turn-based strategy gaming, and remains immensely entertaining to this day.

I really enjoy playing Heroes of Might and Magic III. It's extremely addicting, and each map can take several hours to complete. Most real-time strategy games test your ability to get resources instead of your strategy skills in and outside of battle. In fact, I think that my WarCraft II playing is improved by the strategy lessons I learned in HOMM3. My recommendation is that anyone who enjoys strategy games, even if you've never played a turn-based game before, should buy HOMM3. You will definitely enjoy it.

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 ist göttlich, genial, unglaublich. Ich könnte wohl noch seitenlang weiter schreiben, denn das Spiel bietet eine unglaubliche Fülle an Optionen und Möglichkeiten. Aber ich mache es an dieser Stelle eben mal kurz und sage dass dieses Spiel ein absolutes Must-Have ist.

om du tyckte Heroes II var mediokert, så ska du hålla dig borta. Personligen känner jag att detta är ett spel som håller en i ett järngrepp och vägrar släppa taget. Därför vill jag lyfta på min stjärnbeströdda struthatt och salutera Heroes of Might and Magic III. Fast inte riktigt ännu. Jag ska bara spela "en timme till" först...

Près de trois ans après la sortie de Heroes of Might and Magic II, considéré maintenant comme mythique, New World Computing se décide enfin à réapprovisionner les drogués de la série en sortant un nouvel épisode. Difficile de succéder à son illustre ancêtre, tant on pouvait penser le gameplay presque parfait. Et pourtant, après des dizaines d’heures passées sur ce nouvel épisode, la dépendance se refait sentir à nouveau. Oui, Heroes of Might and Magic III est le digne successeur de son ancêtre, s'avère être le meilleur épisode de la série.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it--the Heroes series triumphantly returns Fantasy-themed strategy games have two great series--Warlords and Heroes of Might & Magic--and one game that damn well should have been a great series--Master of Magic.

While I've always thought Master of Magic was the best of the bunch, due to its rich magic system and more detailed, Civilization-style economy, the latest installment of the Heroes series comes close to changing my mind.

In een tijd waarin real-time strategy games de markt domineren is het goed te zien dat HM&M III, samen met de Lord of the Realm serie, de X-Com en Civilization games, aantoont dat turn-based goed uit kan pakken. HM&M III garandeert dan ook verslavende gameplay en fun tot de zon weer op komt.

Einsteiger, beeilt euch, sonst kaufen euch die Profis alle Packungen weg: Heroes 3 ist für Greenhorns und Strategieveteranen gleichermaßen empfehlenswert. Ich darf gar nicht erzählen, wie oft ich beim Testen in die Nur-noch-eine-Runde-Falle getappt bin: Nur noch bis zum nächsten Wochenanfang, nur noch eine Runde, eine weitere (weil der Gegner in Reichweite gekommen ist), nur noch bis zur Schlacht, bis zur Stadteroberung, zum Gegenangriff, zum nächsten Wochenanfang... Anders als Michael finde ich die Grafik nicht bieder, sondern hübsch und übersichtlich. Das eigentlich simple Spielprinzip ist mit soviel sinnvollem Drumherum angereichert, daß mir nie langweilig wurde. Sicher, gerade die Endphase einer Mission gerät zur Routine, weil ich meist mit sechs Hilfshelden mühsam meine beiden Hauptheroen mit Truppennachschub versorge, bevor es zur Entscheidungsschlacht kommt. Aber die Aussicht auf die nächste Mission motiviert ungemein.

HOMM3 is a wonderful game, but I couldn't rate it higher than 85/100 due to the lack of any real innovation. It is the same game as HOMM2 with better graphics and more stuff, as I said before. Without reservation, I recommend it to anyone with even a vague interest in strategy games who missed the previous versions. My only real wish is that one day a game this well-done would be a first release rather than the fourth iteration of a series.

Der dritte Auftritt der Helden ist der bislang überzeugenste und abwechslungsreichste. Er bietet eine kurzweilige Beschäftigungstherapie für raffgierige Entdeckernaturen. Am meisten Spaß bereitet die Erforschung einer unentdeckten Karte mit all ihren Gebäuden, Artefakten und Schatztruhen. Sicherlich, die ganz große Spieltiefe wird nicht geboten, und abgesehen von den majestätischen Klängen und der ordentlichen deutschen Sprachausgabe wirkt die spärlichst animierte Bieder-Präsentation nicht gerade zeitgemäß. Dank der vielen gut aufeinander abgestimmten Spielelemente stimmt es dafür mit der Langzeitmotivation.

Un jeu dans la grande tradition des Heroes Of Might And Magic, dont la réalisation a été sensiblement améliorée. Les fans de jeux de rôle et tout particulièrement ceux qui disposaient déjà des deux précédents volets peuvent investir sans risque dans cette nouvelle mouture. HMM3 succède à son prédecesseur au rang des meilleurs jeux de stratégie par tour disponibles sur PC.

Heroes of Might and Magic III is zeker geen slecht spel. Het is grafisch heel mooi en bevat meer dan genoeg verscheidenheid om het boeiend te houden. Het spel slaagt er echter niet in om de speler mee te sleuren in het verhaal en hem te blijven motiveren. Je weet immers wat er na deze missie komt en na de volgende: opnieuw van het zelfde laken een broek. Daarom denk ik dat veel mensen het spel na enkele missies in elke campagne voor bekeken zullen houden en het spel enkel op internet nog een hele tijd gespeeld zal worden.

While humble in its 2D, turn-based world in comparison to the latest death match gorefest, Heroes of Might and Magic III builds on a powerful and popular series of games by refining the interface and increasing ease-of-use, while keeping those elements that made the previous titles such a hit.

Graphiquement le jeu est plutot bien réalisé. Les déssins sont précis, détaillés quelque soit la phase de jeu. Composé de 41 missions, de 6 campagnes, d'un éditeur de scénario et d'un convertisseur de cartes de Heroes 2 vers Heroes 3, vous passerez de très longues heures dans l'espoir d'achever votre quête. Votre déxtérité sera mise à rude épreuve, mais vous vous acharnerez tant le concept d'Heroes III est passionant. Et tenez le vous pour dit, parole d'accroc.
