In the words of that immortal bard, Tom Cruise, “I feel the need… the need for speed!” Speed is definitely what the futuristic hyper-racing game Wipeout 3 delivers, along with excellent graphics, a fitting soundtrack, and more fun than is legally allowed in most states. If you’re looking for a great racing game for your PSX, look no further than Wipeout 3. Jump in your car, drive to the nearest store, and buy it now. Just be mindful of the speed limit.
My first impression was that this was very similar to Wipeout XL (2097). Then I played them both together and I must have been blind not to notice the vast improvements. The inclusion of challenge and Deathmatch modes greatly enhance the gameplay, while the two player spilt-screen mode is sheer class. Add to this the hidden four player Split-screen-Link-up mode and.... well, what are you waiting for? Go get some!
Wip3out is a more than worthy sequel to two of the greatest racers on PlayStation. To paraphrase a Ricki Lake audience member: "Girl, this game is all that and more, but you've got to dump that trailer trash husband of yours"...

More of the same, which isn't bad news at all. An updated version of the classic series with a wealth of gameplay modes and options that will surely keep gamers busy. Fantastic graphics, especially lighting effects, great speed and great music.

Psygnosis is again ready to launch a futuristic attack on the fortress of racing games, and nobody does it better...
Power Unlimited (Oct, 1999)

Essentially, W3 looks and sounds the way you'd expect it to: great.. It could be said that the series has lost some of its arcade racing-game appeal. It's always been a smart arcade racer, and now it's positively brainy, for better and worse. You'll have to memorize where you want to come out around every corner of every track, just like in Wipeout XL, but now you just have several other things to think about at the same time. W3 should appeal to longtime fans of the series who are looking for a new challenge and perhaps to folks who didn't find the license tests of Gran Turismo too frustrating. It is, however, sure to turn off many new players because of its high level of difficulty. Its pluses far outweigh its flaws, though, and while it doesn't steal the title belt from Wipeout XL as the best futuristic racing game of all time, it's a worthy sequel.
Game Revolution (Oct, 1999)
Wipeout 3 is a great new dose of anti-gravity racing magic and a must-have for all hardcore fans. Sure, you don't fix what 'aint broke, but I just wish the game had a little something more a career more, vehicle upgrades, something. While it's still one of the best racers out there, it doesn't really conquer any new ground. On the other hand, it doesn't lose any of its parent's territory either, like Teddy Caeser or Joel The Hun did.
If you were a big fan of Wipeout XL, or even the original Wipeout, it won't take you long to get settled into Wipeout 3; not much has changed as far as the basic controls or gameplay features-instead Wipeout 3 is mostly new ships, new tracks and minor tweaks to the same formula.
The Video Game Critic (Sep 14, 2000)
The analog control is spot-on, and the understated, pulsating music makes playing this game almost a surreal experience. Least I forget, there are plenty of power-ups and weapons to keep your opponents at bay. Wipeout 3 isn't particularly innovative, but it does a nice job of elevating a winning formula.
