Defender of the Crown: Heroes Live Forever

aka: Defender of the Crown: Les Héros Ne Meurent Jamais
Moby ID: 28868

Description

Defender of the Crown: Heroes Live Forever is a "casual" remake of the classic hit, Defender of the Crown. Set in post-Norman Conquest England, Heroes Live Forever puts you in the shoes of a Saxon lord—with the ultimate goal of eliminating all rival lords and reuniting the kingdom.

Once again, the core gameplay consists of a territorial conquest game on a map, similar to Risk. Buy armies and garrisons made up of five different types (infantry, knights, crossbowmen, bowmen, and catapults) and fight tactical battles against your foes. Tactics cards can be won in battle or purchased with gold and then played in these battles, giving special bonuses that enhance your army or weaken your opponents.

Mini-games break up the conquest game and bring rewards of either gold or fame. These mini-games include jousts, archery contests, castle raids, princess kidnappings and rescues, and castle sieges. Of course, Robin of Locksley is still available to offer his assistance (up to three times) to Saxon lords, but beware: this time around, the Norman lords can call on the Black Templars for aid as well!

Unloving careless remake to rake in some cash

The Good
You get cards you can play during battle for an advantage - a nice feature I don't recall from any of the older versions. Most features are adapted solidly from the classic version, but not much new there. The battle screen is animated and battles are round-based, which is nice but adds little to actual gameplay.

The Bad
The biggest disaster: the AI is terrible. Just stand back, watch them kill off each others army after army at the richest territory and then strike their main castles! A close second: The epic atmosphere and "movie" sequences even the C64 version managed are gone. Bounce out has more.

Asking Robin for help requires your army to travel there - usually a waste of time or impossible. Other than in some older versions, the "spice" features like joust and raiding are of negligible impact, instead of being part of a winning strategy. The Honour system is botched in that losses can be ignored as it builds up from various sources much too quick. Even what little strategy usually is needed when deciding which territory to conquer is gone.

The Bottom Line
Another loveless clone, ok as free side dish, like, at work, but not challenging and not worth your money. I'm glad I got it for free.
