Description

A village, isolated for years from the surrounding influences of technology, finds itself subject to a terrible plague. You control one of three potential saviors, a government agent sent to the village (The Bachelor), an undertaker's son come to take over the business from his father (Haruspex), and a girl with mystical healing powers (Imposter), the latter who can only be played after completing the game using one of the other characters.

As a "simulation" it concentrates on making sure that the story is completely immersive and that the player is drawn into the story, which is deliberately convoluted and almost impossible to understand fully without first playing through the game as all three characters.

The player views the world from a first person perspective, with menus available to display many of the players stats and the current position at the touch of a button, in a similar way to most mainstream RPGs. Combat is not a particularly important part of the game and is therefore controlled by a rather inaccurate point-and-shoot system, although the in-game weapons are deliberately ineffective.

Much of the game's storyline is played out through conversations with other characters, which take place in a separate menu containing a previous chat log at the top of the screen and clickable dialogue options at the bottom (a system instantly recognizable to anyone who has played KotOR). Items in the game are controlled using a menu placed at the bottom of your screen with separate item slots for each, vis-a-vis Diablo or Neverwinter Nights.

Trivia

The pistol in the game is the Webley-Fosbery Self-Cocking Automatic Revolver, a British weapon produced from 1901 to 1915. It is easily recognizable thanks to the distinctive zig-zag grooves on the cylinder.
