Resident Evil

Resident Evil is a rare commodity in several ways. First, it is one of the few titles that can jump from a console to the PC and back with no loss of quality or experience. Second, it a game that can be picked up three years after its release and still have the same impact it did on day one. Finally, very few games can claim to have spawned a genre. Resident Evil can make this claim, as well as the unique claim of near perfection on the first try.

Resident Evil, whether it is on the Playstation or PC, is just a damn good game. With minute improvements over the Playstation predecessor, any PC owners who own a 3D accelerator should get their money's worth. One important thing: This game is NOT for those with a weak stomach. If you can't handle gore, you can't handle Resident Evil.

A bit more tweaking could have made this game a classic. It demands a hefty wedge of disk space for what it is, but that said, Resident Evil is generally a triumphant conversion of an excellent game. You won't be disappointed.

Having played Resident Evil on the Playstation, it was exciting to see it transformed into a PC title. The graphics and effects that are all a part of Resident Evil have been carried over to perfection and even increased in quality, thanks to the more advanced 3D acceleration. The different puzzles and dialog that happen throughout the entire game give the story more depth behind it than is typically found in adventure games. I found it sometimes hard to solve and figure out how to do certain things, but then again, that is the whole point behind games like this. Resident Evil is a welcome change away from all the standard clones that are coming out this holiday season. It is also nice to see that there still can be a game produced that puts you in a state of suspense while you are playing!

Resident Evil besitzt mehr Gurselpotential und Atmospähre als alle anderen Spiele. Die Rätsel sind gerade schwer genug, um den Spieler voranzutreiben und die Hintergrundgeschichte macht ständig Lust auf mehr. Unverständlich bleibt nur dielieblose Konvertierung von der Playstation. Mit schöneren Grafiken, besserer Soundqualität und einer flexibleren Steuerung hätte Resident Evil ein echter Hit werden können.

Ich bin wirklich nicht pingelig, wenn es um Gewalt in Computerspielen geht. Zwar finde ich auch das indizierte Quake brutal, doch wirkt dort die Darstellung so überspitzt, daß ich sie als Satire akzeptieren kann. Resident Evil hingegen kommt der Grenze zur Geschmacklosigkeit gefährlich nahe. Nichtsdestotrotz hat es Capcom geschafft, daß ich mein Hemd oft auswringen mußte: Plötzlich durch Fensterscheiben springende Werwölfe und heranwankende Zombies sorgen für Schweißausbrüche. Die Rätsel sind logisch aufgebaut und fair; wegen des kleinen Inventars muß ich nicht Unmengen von Gegenständen mit mir führen und behalte so die Übersicht. Allerdings nervt mich die Speicherfunktion ungemein. Zumindest hier hätte man die Videospiel-Version für den PC überarbeiten sollen. So aber sind nach jedem Bildschirmtod (und man stirbt viele!) meist weit zurückliegende Spielstände zu laden.

Voor het geven van de score zit ik wel een beetje met een probleem. Langs de ene kant is RE een spel met een geweldige atmosfeer. Heb je een 3D accelerator dan beweegt bovendien alles heel soepel en ziet het er goed uit. Het spel zelf is echter verschrikkelijk frustrerend door de ongelijke kansen in de gevechten. Heb je bovendien de nodige hardware niet, dan wordt het een echte mission impossible.

No, what makes the game worth playing is being able to experience what is the worst dialog and voice-acting ever committed to CD-ROM. Eclipsing even the legendary Inca series, you can only hope it was intentionally made this way (some of the location descriptions would imply it's just one of those bizarre Japanese translation issues). Whatever the case, Resident Evil is the funniest game of 1997, and fans of all things Velveeta should worship it like the god it is.

Wer um alles in der Welt ist für dieses ätzend kleine Inventar verantwortlich? Wenn ich beispielsweise das Pech habe, erst die Patronen und dann die Heilpflanze aufzunehmen, kann ich letzte unter Umständen nicht nutzen, weil kein Platz mehr frei ist. Wenn mein Held dann schwerverletzt zum Depot wankt und sich unterwegs meucheln läßt, werde ich selbst zum Zombie. Daß man nur in bestimmten Räumen speichern darf, ist auch nicht toll. Außerdem habe ich selten so viele langweilig-häßliche Türen ansehen müssen wie hier bei den langen Ladezeiten. Zuviel Ärgernis für vier Sterne, aber drei sind es dicke.
