Star Wars: Jedi Knight - Mysteries of the Sith

The mother of all add-ons, Mysteries of the Sith is a monumental achievement not only in expansion packs, but in narrative 3D games as a whole. Simply put, it is more fun than Jedi Knight, and better than I had ever expected. If you’re a Star Wars fan, or own the original Jedi Knight, you must run out and buy it as soon as it’s available…not because of any calling of the Force, or the bidding of the Emperor, but simply because it is a testament to great 3D game design and an example for other game makers to follow. The developers drew from the greatest source of inspiration there is…the trilogy…and it really paid off. Mysteries of the Sith really is the “Ultimate Star Wars Experience.”

Mysteries Of The Sith is more than just an 'add-on' to Jedi Knight - it is a completely new addition to a gaming series that we at PC Zone hope will run and run. So if you haven't played Jedi Knight yet, get it. Then get this. Otherwise you'll almost certainly be missing out.

Geht‘s denn noch besser? Aber ja doch! Besonders technologisch ist LucasArts noch nicht am Ende der Fahnenstange. Trotz kleiner Verbesserungen wirkt die 3D-Engine wenige Monate nach Jedi Knight noch ein bißchen angestaubter. In Sachen Grafikbeschleunigung, Lichteffekte und Texturendetails setzen derzeit andere Entwickler Maßstäbe. Trotzdem: Die Atmosphäre-Akrobatiker um Stephen Shaw haben es wieder geschafft, unvergleichlichen Spielspaß zu kreieren. Kein anderes Level-Design wirkt so ausgeklügelt, selten wird ein so intensives Spiel-Erlebnis geboten. Dazu trägt natürlich auch der Stimmungs-Bonus bei. Er tritt besonders zutage, wenn man sich ein ums andere Mal an Szenen aus der Film-Trilogie erinnert fühlt. Wer Jedi Knight bisher verpaßt haben sollte, erhält mit MOTS jedenfalls einen noch „mächtigeren“ Grund, sich dem Krieg der Sterne-Universum hinzugeben. Ich jedenfalls opfere selten meine wohlverdiente Nachtruhe einem PC-Spiel, Mysteries of the Sith aber hat es geschafft.

So muß eine Zusatzdisk aussehen. LucasArts spendiert der Erweiterung zu Jedi Knight viele Features, die andere Hersteller für einen "richtigen" Nachfolger unter Verschluß gehalten hätten. Zusammen mit dem überlegenen Leveldesign und der leicht verbesserten Grafik ist Mysteries of the Sith ein Muß für alle Jedi Knight-Besitzer. Lediglich die Künstliche Intelligenz läßt in manchen Situationen zu wünschen übrigen – aber vielleicht wird das in Jedi Knight 2 gelöst.

I must hand it to LucasArts on this one. Mysteries of the Sith has exceeded my expectations. It has everything a good companion disk should, adding new features such as colored lighting and new characters, while staying true to the formula that made Jedi Knight such a success. If you played and beat Jedi Knight and are looking for more, this game is for you.

Der Sternenkrieger in mir ist glücklich und kann es selbst kaum fassen, aber Mysteries of the Sith setzt auf Jedi Knight nochmals einen drauf. Hier gibt es mehr neue Gegner, Mächte und sonstige Extras als in vielen anderen 3D-Action-Programmen zusammen. Die Star-Wars-Atmosphäre kommt dank der vielen Anspielungen auf die Filme noch prächtiger rüber, und in Sachen Level-Design ist den Entwicklern ein weiterer Geniestreich gelungen. So abwechslungsreiche und unterhaltsame Missionen bietet kein vergleichbares Programm – und trotzdem geht nie der rote Action-Faden verloren.

Alt i alt er Mysteries of the Sith alle pengene værd. Det gør et i forvejen fantastisk spil endnu bedre - og gør det til en overkommelig pris.

Det är svårt att kritisera MOTS. Ett suveränt animerat Rancor-monster, en gömd nivå där du får spela Luke som slåss mot Boba Fett i Cloud City, tre multiplayer-personligheter (som ger spelarna olika vapen) är skäl nog att köpa det här spelet.

Gelungene Verlängerung für den derzeit besten 3D-Shooter. LucasArts beweist mit dieser Zusatz-CD für "Jedi Knight", daß man die spielerische Macht gepachtet hat.

Mysteries of the Sith is verplichte kost als je van Jedi Knight hield. het enige minpunt is het ontbreken van filmpjes tussen de missies. Maar dit wordt ruimschoots gecompenseerd door nieuwe locaties, nieuwe vijanden en enkele (zeer) leuke opties. Uiteraard staat er ook een verbeterde multiplayeroptie op de cd-rom.

In the end, Mysteries of the Sith offers a tremendous number of technical improvements over Jedi Knight. The only significant problems with Sith are the disappointing level design and gameplay through the middle portion of the single-player game. As an expansion pack for a now-classic first-person action game, Sith is very good - but it isn't great.

Overall, this is an add-on worth getting, but it's something of a disappointment too. Gamers addicted to lightsabers and force powers will love it (new powers include Chain Lightning and Force Projection); those more in tune with blasters will be less thrilled. The saving grace, and the thing that makes this a must-buy for Internet gamers, are the 15 multiplayer levels, including a new game (Kill the Fool with the Ysalamiri) and four different characters (Scout, Bounty Hunter, Soldier, Jedi), each with different weapons and Force abilities (or lack thereof). The solo game isn't stellar, but it'll do; buy it instead to battle it out in the Imperial Throne room with your online buddies.
