SWIV 3D

aka: SWIV 3D Assault
Moby ID: 771
Windows Specs

Description official description

SWIV 3D is a 3D remake of the original SWIV. It features a voxel-based 3D engine and mission-based play, as well as a myriad of new enemies and completely new style of gameplay.

It plays a lot like a typical 3D shooter: you control a helicopter which you must navigate through landscapes, all the while shooting at buildings, vehicles and other planes or helicopters and fulfilling your mission goals.

Annoyingly less fun than the Amiga classic.

The Good
I really liked the Amiga game. Swiv (which came out in - I think it was 1991, but I might be wrong on this, so don't quote me) was and still is one of my favorite shooters ever, and I still play it every few days on my Amiga. So when I heard about Swiv3D, I was immediately excited and wanted to see what this amazing shooter will spawn next. And yes, I was disappointed.

  • The voxel engine is both good and bad (see later). Good in that it presents decent graphics, but the kind I would expect from a game a year or even two years older. The visuals are OK, but nothing more, and don't ressemble the original game even remotely.
  • The sound effects are OK, but what music there is is simply terrible.
  • The controls are admittedly excellent.

However:

The Bad
It's simple graphics engine is not nearly as good as I expected, or even as good as I would expect from a 1996 game. The music, as already mentioned, is terrible. The gameplay is repetitive and not fun, and the game plays nothing like the game it is supposed to be a remake of.

The Bottom Line
A generally mediocre game you'll enjoy for a few minutes, then dump.
