The game stretches to whatever the desktop resolution is. Some games preserve ration when stretched (i.e. 4:3 game may add black borders on a widescreen monitor or 16:9 game on a 4:3 monitor). But some games simply stretch the game entirely to fit new resolution even if it messes their ratio.
