There's conflicting info on the release date.

USA
--------------------------

20 November 1997 is advocated by IGN/GameSpy.

31 December 1997 is advocated by GiantBomb, GOG.com, Wikipedia, GameFAQs and even IMDb.

31 December 1998 (erroneous as hell) is advocated by GameSpot.

EU / UK
---------------------------

18 January 1997 (worldwide, impossible) is advocated by GamePressure.

11 February 1998 is advocated by GameFAQs and Wikipedia.

....when the hell was this game released?

US release: January 13, 1998 (source: press release)

And UK release late 1997 according to same source.

It's usually safe to assume that Jan 1 and Dec 31 listed release dates mean sometime during that year, don't have anything more specific but the database structure requires an exact date, can't take just a year like it can here.

Exactly. The same is often true for any dates falling in the first or last of a month, especially on Gamespot and their connected databases.

I know, but the most sources (which I've listed above) have 31 December, and I think some of these (like GameFAQs and GiantBomb) don't need to evade null values, and GOG can always ask the rightsholder. IGN/GameSpy is an intriguing one, though.

Giantbomb probably used Wikipedia as a source which, if not sourced otherwise, take their release dates from Gamespot which take their release dates from Gamefaqs which are worthless.

Gamespot and GameFAQs share the same database. And while it's correct that the current databases don't need to avoid null values, the database where these dates originated from (most likely some old version of Gamespot's database) obviously did.

Always do a common sense check, and any date that falls on the 31st of December fails that.
