I've tried playing this game a couple of times and enjoyed it, but it always gets to a point where it just really wants to crash -- if you don't mind a SPOILER, it's when the Cronus aliens start messing with me. Loading from an alternate save doesn't do any good, as it just seems to crash at the same point. Sometimes the saved games are corrupted. This happens with games that are started and played only with the v1.01 patch (that is supposed to 'help' prevent this from happening). It's happened with more than one computer, too -- I wonder how anyone ever actually found out how the game ends.
Anyone have any ideas, fixes, workarounds, or something I'm missing?

I have not had any issues with crashes and I have finished the game twice. Once when it first came out and once about 5 years ago. I am now at the point where the Empiants are attacking.

The game moves along as you learn to communicate with the empiants. You work together to get the tech needed for FTL and leave for better fields. You have to stop a rebellion near the end and finally launch.
