I was very happy that they got rid of random enemies and the limited, rigid Japanese battle system with its separate "battle screens". Anyone else seconds this opinion?

I don't hate the menu-based FF style and will gladly play it again, but XII was a great change of pace. The lack of a separately loaded battle screen is especially nice; even if it was more of an old-school type battle I could very much live with a separate screen not being loaded and battles taking place right there, as with Chrono Trigger.

I just wish that for the AI-controlled allies we could be more detailed in how their gambits work. I'd like to make things a bit more conditional: Maybe make an action happen only when multiple conditions are met, or when one condition is true and another is false. As is, a linear set of simple instructions seemed pretty limiting once I got used to it.
