Basically a builder's sim, Caterpillar Construction Zone lets you take command of those world-famous bright yellow machines and follow the directions of fellow hard hats. For example, in the very first level, you lift boulders with a D10R track-type tractor (bulldozer, to the non-initiated) and dump them in the assigned spots. When you've completed your task, hop in another Caterpillar machine and drive to the exit.You'll be challenged with a wide variety of chores, from laying pipe and pouring concrete for a desert subdivision to tilling fields down on a farm. You can also explore the countryside in each of the 25 password-protected levels. The graphics have all the clarity and vibrancy you've come to expect of Game Boy Color games.Steering with the Control Pad can be frustrating, as you have to have to position your vehicle just right before dumping your load or squeezing down a narrow lane. However, the tasks are straightforward and there is no time limit. The audio track nicely replicates the putt-putting of big engines, but all the machines sound alike.Fans of construction equipment want to know as much about them as possible, so developer Realtime Associates has wisely included color-coded diagrams for each piece of machinery.
