The thinking-man's sci-fi movie becomes a wham-bam action game on the Nintendo GameCube.

As in the movie and the original novel by critical favorite Philip K. Dick, a futuristic Precrime unit brings perpetrators to justice before they commit a crime. John Anderton is the consummate Precrime professional, but when he in turn is tagged for arrest, he flees and tries to prove his innocence. Most of the game is spent battling John's one-time comrades in Precrime.

The Movie, The Game

Your nintendo.com scribe has not seen the movie, but has been told that the game takes considerable liberties with the storyline. The most dramatic difference is that the John Anderton in the game is almost the mirror opposite of Tom Cruise in the movie. Activision's John is big, he's blonde, and, instead of speaking, he growls. In the brief cinema sequences, he sneers at perpetrators and pointy-headed bureaucrats alike. In action, he's one nonstop flurry of punches and roundhouse kicks, save when he whips out a concussion rifle or similar futuristic armament.

In short, John Anderton is Dolph Lundgren, and Minority Report is a nonstop action movie, shorn of movie director Steven Spielberg's philosophical musings. Expect plenty of mayhem, but don't expect anything that will stretch your brain.

Places, Everyone. Action!

The levels follow a familiar pattern of action games, too. Most of the time, you beat up every guy in a room to unlock a door, then move onto the next room. Sometimes you'll be given a subtask, like turning off a gas leak or finding a passkey. Given that most enemies are weaker when they don't have backup, you'll want to lure them, one at a time, through doors that then slide closed.

Often, you can advance without taking down everyone in sight. And that's precisely what you should do, by running or jumping. We don’t want to suggest John is superhuman, but a gazelle would be jealous of this guy's leaping ability. With this simple tactic, you can blow through some levels in less than a minute.

Minority Report doesn't have infinitely replicating bad guys, so before advancing to the next room you should carefully explore for weapons, cash and health boosts. The game is full of interactives, and one of its more fun aspects involves smashing cabinets, computer monitors and plate-glass windows. More often than not you'll find nada, but you'll always leave behind wreckage worthy of a small hurricane.

Black Market

You can pause the game at any time and enter the Black Market, where you can buy more impressive fighting moves and both permanent and temporary upgrades. Permanent upgrades include extra ammo and a hit-point boost. Temporary upgrades include a strength boost, armor upgrades and, best of all, invincibility.

The ease with which you can enhance John's performance or items gives Minority Report an intriguing, if very modest, resource-management aspect.

Quirky rules seem to govern the health of both John and his enemies. John will take no damage for punching out a whole bank of glass cabinets, but then lose health for dropping 10 feet. He can take out squads of robots and rival agents with ease, but will have to fight much longer and harder to defeat an agent who happens to be a boss. The only discernible difference between plain-vanilla and boss characters is spiffier clothes.

Gruntin' and Groanin'

In most action games, defeated bad guys fall to the floor, then quietly fade away. Here they fade away, sure, but not before twisting and squirming like so many rag dolls. In fact one of the easiest ways to defeat a lone bad guy is to punch or throw him to the ground, then simply stomp the poor blighter until all the green drains from his health meter.

Graphics and Sound

Graphically, the game is very much a mixed bag. Textures are simple, and despite all the glass there's a painful lack of cool reflection effects. Judging from the cinema sequences, the future is populated with people too hip to move their lips. On the other hand, the atmosphere-warping effect of the Concussion Gun is extremely cool.

When badly pummeled, John will sometimes puke yellow blotches. Thank goodness those aren't too detailed.

While not especially memorial, the pounding electronica score certainly complements the nonstop action. The best voice acting in the game may be the bad guys' shockingly realistic "Ohs" and "Ooohs," but you'll soon tire of them.

Controlling the camera angle with the C-stick is a bigger adventure than it should be. It's common for John to vanish off-camera or behind a closed door.

Bottom Line

Minority Report is a straightforward game, low on subtlety and loaded with action.
