R-Type III: The Third Lightning

Moby ID: 12911

Old-school shooters don't get any more exciting than this.

Sticking to its 2-D side-scrolling roots, R-Type III is an exercise in lightning reflexes and razor-sharp memorization. Learning enemy patterns is the key to survival as the screen is chock-full of flying creatures, stationary turrets and gigantic bosses.

And just when you though things were getting easy, the alien environment becomes a virtual labyrinth of narrow spaces and unexpected twists and turns your R-90 ship will have to navigate.

When starting a new game you can choose one of three Force pods to trail you. Your choice is really just a matter of taste because each one is a potent ally, especially once you gather a couple of power-ups.

Force pods can be attached to the front or rear of your ship. They can also be detached at any time to attack independently.

Holding the fire button will charge your Beam or Hyper weapon. The Beam weapon shoots a wide blast and will easily destroy groups of small enemies. The Hyper weapon temporarily beefs up your firepower followed by a cool-down period where you can't charge your guns.

The music beeps and bloops with old-school flavor. The sound effects of your primary weapon overpowers all other sound effects.

Bottom Line

R-Type III: The Third Lightning is a great old-school shooter that delivers on a promise of nonstop action.
