PC Booter version

Early dungeon RPG

The Good
The game loads up with a nice rendition from J Bach, where you name your character & given the quest you have to do. The game is easy to get into, with no preliminaries, & you are straight into the dungeon. Although the graphics are very simple, they do what they need to, with the dungeon opening up as you explore it. Simple easy instructions although you to easily start playing, & any actions are quick to process.

The combat allows you to hit various body parts, each of which have defensive points, though is confusing what they do

The Bad
The game is really simple, with you having no say on building your character or who they are, no shop where you buy various items to use in game, and no background story on who you are, or the world you are involved in. There is good movement control in game, when you can tell how far you want to go in a direction, but are also told if you use the arrow keys you will see/fight more monsters, which makes little sense.

There are a variety of monsters, but there doesn't seem to be any difference in their powers & how you react to them. It is easy to get killed in a fight, & you are more vulnerable starting out than gaining experience, unlike most games of this type that enable you to gain experience by fighting easier foes at the easiest levels.

The Bottom Line
There seem to have been four games in this series, the later ones of which added more choices in game such as shop & monsters, but the only one released for the PC seems to be this one. They were seemingly released for the Apple II, Atari 400/800, & Commodore 64. I did try the Apple II ones, & although expanded had similar issue in gameplay & lack of story background as this one.

Although an early RPG, other similar games such as Wizardry & Ultima were already being released, & even Wizard's Castle, which were better than this. I cannot really recommend playing this, as it gets quite frustrating getting killed just as you were unlucky, & seemingly having little to do how you play. One for the History books.
