FAQ

What is Receiver?
We created the original Receiver game for the "7-day FPS" challenge to explore gun handling mechanics, randomized levels, and unordered storytelling. With Receiver 2, we are doubling down on the aspects that made the original stand out: the detailed firearm controls and the tense, surreal atmosphere.

Why are you so obsessed with guns?
Love them or hate them, firearms are everywhere in our culture. If you want to understand it then you must understand them as well. While many games include firearms, we felt it was time to have a game that is actually about them.

Are there people or animals to shoot in Receiver?
We don't believe so. All our information suggests that the Threat will only dream killdrones to attack you after the Mindkill, but there's no way to be sure.

How is Receiver 2 different from Receiver 1?
Receiver 2 has the same basic gameplay structure as the first, but more of everything. There are many more sidearms available in Receiver 2, and while Receiver 1 simulated several moving parts for each gun, Receiver 2 simulates *all* of the moving parts.

Does Receiver 2 have online multiplayer or VR support?
No, Receiver 2 is designed to be a single-player experience played on a monitor with a mouse and keyboard.

What is the Mindkill?
You are not yet ready for that knowledge. Only a Receiver who has truly Awakened can understand the nature of the Threat.

Wolfire Games announces sequel to atmospheric gun simulator Receiver

Wolfire Games (creator of Overgrowth and the original Humble Bundle) has announced a sequel to Receiver, their cult classic first-person shooter that is sometimes described as "QWOP for guns". Instead of pressing R to "reload", pressing R will "rack the slide", which usually just ejects chambered rounds uselessly onto the floor. To have any defense against the deadly automated turrets and flying shock drones, the player must figure out how to load each sidearm exactly how they would in real life.

Receiver 2 will launch with eight different sidearms, including the Beretta 92FS, Colt Single-Action Army, and the iconic Desert Eagle. While the original Receiver simulated the major moving parts of each gun, the new game simulates every single internal mechanism down to each spring and screw. "That seemed like the most direct way to make sure they function realistically," explains developer David Rosen, "instead of creating a complicated flow chart, we just apply the player controls to the simulated sidearm and see what happens. That includes common malfunctions that can generally be cleared with the immediate action drill, though the double-feed is a bit more complicated."

When asked if he has any second thoughts about literally training gamers to use guns, he replied, "For every person killed by a mass shooter in the USA, there are hundreds of suicides, and thousands of accidents. Training people to use sidearms correctly is also training them not to use sidearms incorrectly. The in-game tapes teach that this deprives the Threat of one of its most powerful tools for the coming Mindkill, and that a truly Awakened Receiver would never, ever raise a weapon in anger."
