Caverns of Xaskazien

DOS version

A simple game based on a legacy of similar games.

The Good
Again, biased, since I designed it.

My ex-girlfriend, who doesn't like computer games, actually got quite addicted to this one, because of it's simplicity. It is based on earlier games like "Dungeon" for the PET and "Sword of Fargoal" for the Commodore 64. Each level of the dungeon can be depicted on a single screen, though it is only revealed as your character explores it.

The random dungeons and monsters and events make for a game that is always different. Really, boiled down, this is Diablo minus all of its fancy graphics and beautiful music.

And the game periodically gets updated/evolves, always fun, even for me.

The Bad
The graphics leave a lot to be desired.

The Doppelgangers, which start popping up around levels 10 through 14 or so mean that unless you are either very lucky, or have devoted a lot of training in your character to magic, you're gonna bite the dust when you meet more than one of them.

Mummies should cause disease, not poison.

The Bottom Line
Ultra simple hack and slash adventuring, but, similar to what I said about Bard's Tale - sometimes that can be relaxing.
