Star-Studded CD-i Title Voyeur® Now Available for PC CD-ROM From Interplay Productions

Irvine, California-December 2, 1994- Interplay Productions announced today the release of the best-selling CD-i title Voyeur available now for IBM and 100% compatibles on the CD-ROM format. Voyeur is a political thriller which allows the player to peer in and discover what skeletons lie hidden in the closets of Hawke Manor. A host of additional key features enhance the game-play aspect. "The CD-i version of Voyeur was an excellent seller, and we're very excited to be bringing this title to the Personal Computer enthusiasts," said Jerry Luttrell, marketing manager for Interplay Productions. "We're expecting great results with the release of this controversial, enticing title."

Voyeur is a political thriller that combines the suspense of Hitchcock's "Rear Window" with the erotic overtones of Robert Towne's "Chinatown". The title also brings an elaborate cast of accomplished Hollywood actors, including Robert Culp, of "Greatest American Hero" and "I Spy" fame in the lead role as Reed Hawke, and Grace Zabriskie, known for her role in "Twin Peaks".

Additionally, Voyeur for the personal computer, boasts 60 minutes of suspenseful and enthralling full-motion video. Reed Hawke, a decorated fighter pilot, astronaut and CEO of the Hawke Technologies empire, has decided to run for President of the United States. However, blackmail, murder and erotic intrigue are on the agenda at Hawke Manor. As Reed Hawke summons his family together to prepare them for the long campaign road ahead, one member of the family is prepared to reveal a dark truth that will destroy Hawke and his aspirations forever.

The player, equipped with a video camera from the vantage point of their apartment, peers in on the lives of the Hawke family through the windows of Hawke Manor. Experiencing the thrill of the voyeur, the player sits in wait, watching and listening, as the family's twisted past unfolds.

To enhance the suspense, time is of the essence in this interactive whodunit. Players will have one weekend to observe clues, collect evidence and take action before Reed Hawke announces his candidacy Monday morning. But the voyeur beware: if the player chooses to watch a steamy love scene in the bedroom, important clues may be missed in another part of the house being played out at the same time.

As the player passes the cursor through the scene using an intuitive interface, they will pick up available clues: if the cursor becomes an "eye", the player may click to witness a video scene; an "ear" indicates an audio scene; a magnifying glass indicates evidence such as photos, a secret diary or letters.

Voyeur's story changes each time it is played through the use of extensive interlocking multi-pathed plots and scenarios which randomly combine at the start of each new game. To add allure to the "voyeur's" perspective, a different character from the nine villainous family members will attempt to betray Reed Hawke each time Voyeur plays. With a mature theme, Voyeur has a lockout feature and avails only certain members of the household access to the game.

Voyeur is the latest title released by veteran producer Kerry Garrison. His other projects currently include Zombie Dinos from the Planet Zeltoid, Out of this World, Ishido and Solitaire Deluxe to name a few.

Voyeur runs on IBM computers and 100% compatibles, 386DX-40 or better with 2Mb of RAM and a 256 color VGA card with a mouse and hard drive. An MPC compliant CD-ROM is also required.

Voyeur... don’t get caught!

Richard Hawke has it all. Wealth, power, the adoration of millions, and… secrets to protect. This weekend he has gathered his family to discuss his running for presidency of the United States. Lust, revenge and betrayal are all at play in this political thriller.

So do you just watch? Or… will you risk getting involved? Will the videotape you make save the country? Or might it cost you your life?

As the voyeur, it’s all up to you.

* * *

Voyeur was first released on the Phillips CD-i back in 1993 and was one of the first big-budget games to take advantage of the console’s FMV – that’s full-motion-video – capabilities. Whereas today we are used to full-screen video in resolutions of 4K or more, the inclusion of ‘real-life’ filmed content within the context of the game was considered a huge step forward… and Voyeur was leading the way.

It wasn’t only the game’s technical capabilities that made headlines, however. The ostensibly “adult” content – in fact pretty tame in reality – led to Voyeur joining the Leisure Suit Larry series and Digital Pictures’ Night Trap (among others) in an exclusive club of games which stirred up controversy to such a level that the media – acting as society’s moral guardians – called for them to be banned.

In Voyeur, you take on the role of a private investigator hired to collect evidence of wealthy CEO Reed Hawke’s corruption by a member of his family. To keep the game fresh over multiple plays (with multiple endings, again a mechanic well ahead of its time) the family member is chosen at random from those that Reed has gathered together in order to announce his bid for the country’s presidency. Taking control of a video camera located in a building opposite the family’s mansion, your goal is to collect enough video evidence to destroy the would-be-president’s career. You might want to include some danger money in your quote for the weekend though, as if you come to the wrong conclusion after compiling your evidence, you will end up victim of a ruthless assassin!

Interestingly, the game’s design was inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window, with the player initially only able to see partial scenes. If they make the wrong decision about where their focus should be, their sense of context for other material may be tainted. More so that any other game before it, Voyeur elevated FMV above the level of a gimmick and made it an integral part of the gameplay. Critically acclaimed for its originality and the quality of the acting – previous efforts had been hopelessly amateur – Voyeur rightly takes its place among a small number of games that were both highly controversial and great fun to play!

You too can close the blinds, draw the curtains and hone your skills as a top private dick by keeping a close – a very close – eye on the Hawke family, becoming the ultimate… voyeur.
