This is a game that's low on classic soccer strategy and extremely high on hypercaffeinated action. No rules. No crowds. It's all about moves flashier than the Las Vegas strip and respect from your fellow players. Purists will groan, but those with low attention-spans can expect some off-the-wall (literally) excitement.

Play against the world's top professional players, showing off your skills and individual style in 4-on-4 match-ups. From the favelas of Brazil to the urban courts of Amsterdam, gamers taste the flavor of soccer from around the globe. Each city's pitch (field, to you non-fans) is a gourmet example of why soccer is one of the most accessible sports in the world. All you need is a ball and something to count as a goal. This game shows off soccer's universal appeal.

As with the other games in the Street series from EA, players show off their moves with the Trick Stick (the C Stick). Combo several moves together to build up the Gamebreaker meter. When that's full, one of your players can launch a blistering shot that will be too hot for most keepers.

In Rule The Street mode, you pick a rag-tag crew of players for your team. When you defeat opponents, you earn Street Rep and Skill Bills based on how well you played. Skill Bills are used to purchase skill upgrades and enter tournaments and competitions to upgrade your squad's personnel. Also, as you play you unlock a ton of different kits and other apparel for your player to wear. The gear isn't as inspired as it is in the other Street titles, but you should still be able to find yourself some snappy threads.

Players will find the controls simple and easy to learn. On defense, you can tackle the ball handler. On offense, you shoot and pass the ball high or low. Having the pitch surrounded by walls gives players a chance to pass off the wall to themselves or a teammate, making the defender look foolish.

Although the controls are easy enough to learn, the players in the game don't always implement what you want as fast as you want it. Their movements are a bit jerky, and they don't have enough room on the pitch to really combo many ball-handling tricks together.

It's tough to perform tricks in the small pitches, where an opponent is never more than a few steps away. Even if you succeed in tricking one defender, another often steps right up to steal the ball away from you at the end of your trick. You can do the same thing to your opponent.

Balls that you kick over the walls surrounding the pitch bounce back into play, as if the walls extended invisibly to the sky. That's a quirk you can look past, but the overall ho-hum gameplay drags this game down.

Strategy is a key component of real soccer. With FIFA Street, though, you don't really feel a sense of doing anything except kicking the ball around. You can pull off the occasional one-timer or give-and-go, but those are more flashy techhniques than well-thought-out strategies. Bigger pitches are definitely needed.

Bottom Line

The presentation looks nice, but the gameplay lacks luster and personality. Hopefully, the second FIFA Street effort will correct these issues.
