Alien Breed: Obliteration

Moby ID: 19386

Windows version

It's an awesome remake!

The Good
Alien Breed: Obliteration not only captured the fun gameplay of the original game, but it improved it! The gameplay in Obliteration is faster than the original, making the battles even more intense and gripping. A cool new feature is the ability to shoot and back away from my target. The graphics were improved, though some improvements were more subtle than the other. The first improvement was the character sprite. It looks a lot better than the original character. The new look includes more muscular arms, a more realistic stance, and a new uniform. A more subtle improvement was the shading. That added a true sense of depth everything. The audio wasn't much different than the original, other than taking advantage of modern sound technology. It has a lot of replay value too. I can't go a day or two without playing the game for at least a half-hour! I'm totally hooked!

The Bad
The enemy A.I. was okay, but needs some work. If I position myself just right, I can always find a way to trap the aliens in a corner and kill them easily. Another technical flaw is the lighting system. Rather than being rendered on the fly like most games, it's pre-computed. That prevents any special effects such as strobes, flickering, etc. If the game had a better lighting system, it would actually be kind of creepy in an old-school Doom sort of way.

The Bottom Line
It's awesome! Sit down with Alien Breed: Obliteration for about ten minutes and I guarantee that you'll be hooked. Even if you're not into 2D games anymore, you'll see why this game is so gripping!
