Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie

Moby ID: 30999

800-pound gorilla

Ubisoft and Peter Jackson bring the epic King Kong film to the Nintendo DS.Features * Survive as Jack (the movie's Adrien Brody) in a world crawling with predators, using weapons, traps and your team wisely * Slam enemies and throw massive objects in Kong's colossal third-person battles

It doesn't take long to figure out that the makers of this game aimed very high but in the end fell short of their goal. The game itself is similar to that of the Nintendo GameCube version. You play the Jack episodes from a first-person perspective. Non-playable characters join your adventure and help you solve puzzles along the way. (Sorry, Jack Black fans: The NPCs' dialogue appears as text, not as voice.)Unfortunately, the game tries way too hard to make you use the DS's touch screen. As with Ubisoft's Rayman DS, all the action takes place on the top screen. You'll need to tap the bottom screen twice to pick up items and weapons. You'll also use the touch screen to change your view and aim. However, you move by using the Control Pad and the X, Y, A and B buttons and you fire with L and R. This hybrid approach to controls is very unwieldy. In addition, you're not given a choice to alter the controls. Instead of aiming your gun with the Control Pad and moving with the buttons, you're instead wish you had a third hand. The graphics aren't spectacular, but they're passable if you're able to get used to the control scheme.Bottom Line You'd have to be a pretty hard-core fan to pick this one up, which is unfortunate because it seems like there should have much room for opportunity with this title.
