Gra obejmuje pięć faz, odpowiadających poszczególnym etapom ewolucji: komórka, stwór, plemię, cywilizacja i kosmos. Każda z faz oznacza odmienne zadania i cele.

Możesz zacząć od komórek i hodować jeden gatunek - od skromnych początków w praoceanie, aż po wyewoluowanie istot rozumnych! Możesz też od razu zająć się tworzeniem plemion lub budową cywilizacji na różnych planetach. Cały wszechświat gry jest do Twojej dyspozycji. Gdzie się wybierzesz? I dlaczego mając tylko dwoje oczu? Chcesz być galaktycznym ambasadorem pokoju? A może kosmicznym tyranem? Wybór należy do Ciebie!

Masz pod ręką rozmaite narzędzia twórcze. Za ich pomocą projektujesz wszystkie elementy wszechświata gry: stwory, pojazdy, budynki, a nawet statki kosmiczne. Choć SPORE jest grą dla jednego gracza, dzieła Twoje i innych fanów są automatycznie przesyłane między poszczególnymi galaktykami, co zapewnia nieograniczoną liczbę światów do eksplorowania.
