Press Release - PlayStation 2

If you blink, you'll miss the race.

Strap your hands across your GCN Controller and motorcycle down these mean streets of the grim techno-industrial future.

The third installment in Acclaim's combat-bike franchise, XG3 boasts 12 daredevil drivers, 10 sinuous courses and enough advanced weaponry to satisfy the prop man on a Schwarzenegger blastfest.

The main one-player mode takes you through a series of three-track leagues (Lithium, Rubidium, Caesium and Francium) named for those funny-sounding elements at the outer fringes of the periodic chart. Each race is two laps. Within a league, you must place at least seventh out of a field of 12 in order to advance to the next track.

As many as four leadfooting friends can zoom together in Team Grand Prix, Head-to Head or co-operative modes.

The GCN's gazelle-like graphics processing makes possible for the first time Acclaim UK's vision of track splits, loop-the-loops, corkscrews and vertical climbs and plunges, all at a buttery-smooth 60 frames per second. Save for falling snow and the occasional animated billboard, though, the environments are static and sterile. Weather and time-of-day for the harbors, mountains, glaciers and canyons are not configurable.

Despite the dour ambience (complete with a properly foreboding soundtrack from Ministry of Sound), XG3 plays most like a zany Midway racer a la Cruis'n World or California Speed. Braking is rarer than homeliness on Temptation Island. Because you can't go off the track or lay down your bike, your constant challenge is to avoid time-wasting brushes against the rails. On the more vertiginous courses, you'll want to save your turbos for the 90-degree climbs.

The default Controller configuration seems designed to give you a sore thumb, as you must constantly press A to accelerate while occasionally pressing Y to shoot or X to turbo. Your Nintendo.com swami advises you to assign these much-used actions to the L and R buttons.

Although you never quite feel like you're riding a motorcycle, controls are prompt and precise --necessary for a high-speed game like this.

Whilst XG3 can display three or four bikes at once, they're typically so distantly spaced that all you can see is a series of tiny streaks. (Team members have color-coded streaks. Supposedly, your CPU-controlled partner will help you out.) Direct hits bestow rival riders with an encompassing glow that more-or-less says, "I'm slowin' down for a few seconds. Go ahead and pass me!"

You can power up your shields by racing through neon-tinted shield depots on the track shoulders. New weaponry, engines and other upgrades can be had for cash at the XG Mall.

XG3 delivers speed in abundance and as such makes a superb showcase for the NINTENDO GAMECUBE system's graphics capabilities. This game supports Dolby Surround.
