Pokémon Trading Card Game

Game Boy Color version

A very fun spin off

The Good
This game is a nice little spin off to the Pokémon series. It is very fun, and has a lot of replay value, since there are 226 cards in total to collect. The game can be challenging at some times, since building a totally perfect deck is not possible. Dueling is fun mostly, since if you duel the people more then once, you'll always get them using different strategies, so you don't know what to expect, but in the main games, the trainers always have the same Pokémon. Also, this game is good for the people who don't know how to play the Pokémon trading card game, thanks to the tutorial at the beginning of the game. Plus, all the hardcore Pokémon collectors are satisfied too, by the promotional card in the box!

The Bad
One of the main problems with this game, is that it is very linear, compared to the other Pokémon games. There are only eleven places to visit in total, and you simply chose where you want to go on the world map and you go there. That's it. No exploring. At all. When I mentioned that there were 226 cards to collect, only 224 are available in the game, as two of them require you to "Card pop!" with someone else who has that game. Now people might say that was the case with the main Pokémon games, but those were slightly different to each other, while this one requires two people to have the same game, which some people wouldn't. Plus you can't "Card pop!" with same person very often. And not many people would know even one person who had the game. (When you see sealed copies in Toys R Us over four years after its release it can never be a good sign). And what makes it worse, you can't even battle your rival again until you get all 226 cards!

The Bottom Line
This is a very good game to fans of Pokémon and the Pokémon Trading Card Game alike. Just don't expect "Catch 'em all" here..
