Description

McPixel is the commercial version of the McPixel browser version and it includes the six levels from the original game. The player controls a man through about 100 quick challenges where the day needs to be saved in less than 20 seconds. The game features a retro-style pixel art look and each scene is set in a single screen. The player interacts with the environment by clicking or touching parts in the scenery. These do not stand out, but an exclamation mark appears when an action is performed. Most scenarios require the guy to avoid being blown up, but much of the experience is also centered about going through the different types of options to uncover all gags with a lot of slapstick violence. Not all actions lead to an immediate result, sometimes items can be picked up and they are then used elsewhere.

The main story mode is split up into four chapters with three stages each, further divided into about six scenes. Chapters and scenes need to be unlocked gradually. Most failed scenes ends in an explosion but even if the guy is blown up, it is usually possible to progress. Players are encouraged to replay scenes to uncover all the gags. Next to the story mode there is an endless mode to go through all scenes quickly. Between regular rounds there are often strange bonus rounds. In the PC version different types of extras can be unlocked such as a level editor. The PC version also includes free DLC that is loaded in-game and does not need to be downloaded separately.

Not my cup of tea

The Good
The game was pretty funny. That is by far the best thing going for it.

The Bad
The game is extremely frustrating to play. When you take an action, you have no idea what your character will actually do. As a result, the game is just repeated trial and error. To make matters worse, there is a very short time limit, so you find yourself just clicking wildly hoping for a good result. The graphics are also pretty bad, but that is part of the intended art style and not necessarily a negative.

The Bottom Line
McPixel is essentially adventure game "moon logic" taken to the nth degree. You "solve puzzles" without using much of your brain - it's all blind clicking and dumb luck. Some people enjoy this, but I found it too frustrating, despite the humor.
