ShootMania: Storm

Description

ShootMania: Storm is a competitive multiplayer first-person shooter in the vein of Unreal Tournament and Quake III.

Like the TrackMania games, ShootMania features simplified controls compared to most similar games and an in-game level editor that uses building blocks for easy level building.

The game features only three different weapons:

The Rocket, which is the primary weapons and can shoot slow moving rockets that only do damage on direct impact. Four rockets can be fired in quick succession, and slowly recharge again after being fired.

When standing on specific metal platforms the player gains the laser, which shoots a beam of lightning which instantly reaches its destination and has a zoom function to accurately fire along large distances.

The Nucleus is a slow moving projectile similar to the Rocket, except that it will stick to surfaces and detonate after some time, doing area of effect damage. It is only available to the player when in an indoor area.

The game has multiple game modes, all of which focus on competitive multiplayer, either in a free-for-all or team-based format.

Royal is a free-for-all game mode which features the titular storm. In the centre of each Royal map is a pole which can be activated by standing around it for some seconds. Once activated a tornado-like storm will surround the game map. The eye of the storm will shrink over time, forcing the players closer and closer to the pole in the centre of the map. Players spawn with two hitpoints, and can respawn with a single hitpoint as long as the storm has not been activated. Once the storm has been activated players can no longer respawn. Points are gained for kills (each consecutive kill is worth more points, making kill streaks especially worthwhile), activating the pole and for survival. A round ends when one player is left standing and the match ends when a predefined point limit is met.

Melee is typical deathmatch.

Elite is a team-based mode where each round a single attacker must try to capture the pole of the enemy which is defended by three defenders. The attacker receives the laser, which insta-kills while the defenders have to make do with rockets.

Joust is a one one one game mode in which ammo is limited but can be collected by touching the pole.

Siege is a team-based mode with large teams in which attackers have to attack a base using rockets or lasers. Defenders can defend with rockets or nuclei. The objective is to capture multiple poles in a round. Then the roles are reversed and the other team has to try to do better. Attackers don't get to respawn after being killed.

Additional game modes include variants of capture the flag and a sort of checkpoint racing game.

Building blocks allow a great variety of maps to be created. There are several special types of blocks, such as the aforementioned sniper pads and indoor areas in which the players receive the Nucleas. Other special blocks include metal floorplating which allow the players to run very quickly (but not jump) and healing pads (which allow healing, but not jumping or shooting).

With each match players earn ladder points that determine their positions on global leaderboards. Players can also view leaderboards based or country, or state/province/départment/etc., similar to TrackMania United
